Rightside Brewing was founded by a pregnant mother who wanted more non-alcoholic options to drink during her pregnancy. Partnering with Big Kettle Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA, Rightside Brewing has quickly begun to distribute widely across the U.S. with its two beers currently available. This marks one of the last IPAs of the summer season for this series of reviews (not THE last one) and marks a move forward into more fall and winter beers! Huzzah!
How Does it Pour?
Rightside Brewing’s IPA is called American IPA and opens with a crisp smell of hops. As it pours, it has a beautiful dark caramel color and an aroma of hops and roasted malts hop out into the air and tickle your nose. The head forms quickly on this IPA and is a nice cream color.
How Does it Taste?
The darker caramel color was reminiscent of some really great flagship IPAs I’ve had the privilege of trying, but the initial taste was a bit of a surprise and a let-down if I’m being honest. Rightside Brewing crafted the American IPA in a style that I would fit more in the category of Pale Ale than anything else. There is not a lot of hop-forward flavors, but instead a rich balance of roasted mat and a hint of hops on the sides of your tongue. Whereas the balance in flavor and the medium body mouth feel are nice accents to any beer, when I go into an IPA, I expect hops, hops, and more hops!
Overall, I would probably try this again, though I wouldn’t seek it out. Untappd users gave this NA “IPA” from Rightside Brewing a 3.3 out of 5. I would give it a 5 out of 5 on flavor balance, but it would not be at the top of my list of IPAs.
