Ninety 90 Pictures Provides Jobs & Peer Support To People In Recovery

The mission of Ninety 90 Pictures, a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Film and Television Production Company, is to help people in addiction recovery achieve long-term stability through gainful employment in the film industry. The organization will create connections with new people going through recovery to those who have been through it. They will be providing a safe, alcohol and substance-free, work environment. Their first project is taking place in October 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with an incredibly powerful Pilot script called “Die Pretty“.

Die Pretty is produced by Ninety 90 Pictures, a non-profit organization that wants to de-stigmatize addiction by hiring people in all stages of recovery from drugs and alcohol. Die Pretty is based on a true story about heroin addiction and the family curse of dying young.

Please watch this short video that is less than 2 minutes. It will help you better understand the power of storytelling they aim to produce. The goal of this project is to provide a safe, alcohol and drug-free set for the production staff to work in that is at any stage of early to long-term recovery. This project will continue to help chip away at the stigma surrounding addiction and the perceptions of those afflicted.

Why this idea, and why now?

  • There is an opioid crisis in America
  • Recently released data by the CDC show that drug overdose deaths reached a record high of 93,331
  • 69,170 of these deaths were due to opioid overdoses
  • Synthetic Opioids Including Fentanyl Helped Drive Record-High Overdose Deaths in 2020*
  • An almost 30% increase from 2019
  • This is the highest annual total on record

Why this film?

Scott Langer, Co-Founder of Ninety 90 Pictures, wants to tell this story because he’s a recovering alcoholic and addict. Die Pretty is based on Ninety 90 Pictures Co-Founder Rachel Ellner’s battle with heroin addiction and her fear of dying young like the other women in her family.

Their lives were derailed by addiction. Like millions of others, many gave up on them and were defined then by the addictions that were killing them. They founded Ninety 90 Pictures to combine two passions: helping people in recovery and creating art.

In their own words … “If we can give those who have struggled a sense of community, peer support, and a job, we feel that it will help fight the opioid crisis.” – Scott and Rachel

They chose Die Pretty, a psychological dramedy TV pilot, as their first project so that they could realistically portray addiction.

Ninety 90 Pictures Mission and Values:

Ninety 90 Pictures wants to de-stigmatize addiction.

This organization wants to help people in addiction recovery achieve long-term sobriety and stability through gainful employment in the film industry and connect people going through recovery to those who have been through it.

Creating a safe space for people in recovery is augmented by having a sober set and professional support systems on location.

When Ninety 90 Pictures is fully realized, it will be a production company featuring an eclectic body of work and a diverse network of people who have lived to tell the tale and are stronger for it.

We Need Your Help

Ninety 90 Pictures needs to raise $15,000 to fund their upcoming project in October 2021. The total cost of the two-week project is $35K. After some private funding, we have found ourselves $15K short. We are currently accepting donations starting at $10 and going upwards of $2,000, which will give you a producer credit for the film! Please visit our fundraiser page at Seed & Spark to help us make this dream a reality, including providing jobs, rental equipment, insurance, housing, and food for 20 people in recovery for this two-week film set.

SOBER SPOTLIGHT: What to learn more about Scott Langer, Co-Founder of Ninety 90 Pictures? We don’t blame you. Ninety 90 Pictures is a Non-Profit Film and Television Production Company That Provides Jobs to People in Recovery

We at The Sober Curator are big proponents of giving. Whether it be time, talent, or money, we all have unique gifts to share with others. Besides wanting to be a good human, there are many reasons to give.

Multiple studies on the topic reveal that people who give time and money are happier, live longer, and feel more connected. According to Pablo Picasso, the meaning of life is to find your gift. But the purpose of life is to give it away.  Pay it Forward will help you do just this. Our resource directory provides reputable, vetted, recovery-related organizations seeking donations and volunteers to help make our communities better.

The Sober Curator is always looking for new opportunities to give. If you have a favorite nonprofit related to recovery, please share it with us.
