Lily Allen Is Seven Years Sober and Finally Touring Without a Drink in Her Hand
Lily Allen spent her twenties on tour, called it “a big party,” and has spent the years since being more honest about that era than most pop stars would dare. She has been sober since July 28, 2019. Right now she is in Australia, doing the first tour of her life without a drink in her hand.

The It Girl Who Was Quietly Very Sad
From the outside, Lily Allen’s twenties looked like one long party. She has said touring back then felt like “a big party” and that it “sure as hell was fun.”
She remembers it differently. “I definitely like buried my head in drugs and alcohol, but I was really sad,” she told CBS Mornings in November 2025. She added that she “started getting my value from attention of others.”
Fame as the drug that comes before the drugs. Anyone in recovery has heard a version of that story in a meeting, usually from someone who did not have paparazzi outside the door.
Two Years In, She Said It in All Caps
On July 28, 2021, Allen posted a calendar marked “birthday” for July 28, 2019, with a caption that deserves to be framed: “2 Years Drug and Alcohol free today! Getting clean is the BEST thing i ever did, and i’ve done a lot of cool s***.”
That is the whole pitch for sobriety in one Instagram caption. No wellness language, no lesson. Just a woman who has had a very interesting life ranking getting clean at the top of it.
Seven years later she still talks about it that way, with zero apology. If you collect lines like that, our roundup of quotes on sobriety from sober celebrities is your next tab.
Five Years Sober and the Worst Year of Her Life
Then came 2025. After her marriage to David Harbour ended, Allen spent a few weeks in a treatment center. On her BBC podcast “Miss Me?” in February 2025, she described it plainly: “I went into a treatment center for a few weeks, did group and individual therapy, and focused on inner child healing.”
She did not drink. She told British Vogue that October that “drugs and alcohol were my way out, so it was excruciating to sit with those feelings and not to use them.” She has also said the despair was severe enough that she wanted to die, and that checking herself into a residential facility was “strength.”
That is the part of recovery nobody puts on a poster. Sobriety did not make her life painless. It made her present for the pain, and it gave her somewhere to go other than a bottle.
Turning the Breakup Into “West End Girl”
She made an album out of it. “West End Girl,” her first record since 2018, came out October 24, 2025, and it is a blunt, funny, devastating breakup album about an open marriage coming apart.
Yes, there is a song called “Relapse.” No, it is not about substances. NME read it as a song about living up to other people’s expectations. We checked, so the group chat does not have to.

The First Sober Tour of Her Life
Allen had not toured since getting sober, and she admitted on CBS Mornings that she was “nervous.” The post-show adrenaline, she said, is “looking for a place to get out,” and she would need “a routine” or “some kind of ritual” to handle it.
By March 2026 she told Australia’s Sunrise: “I have been sober for nearly seven years now. I have always relied quite heavily on substances and alcohol. I don’t have those crutches anymore.” And in September she put it simply to The Cut: “This is the first tour that I’ve done sober.” She also said she does not miss the hangovers. Fair.

AB’s Take
I got sober on May 1, 2006. Which means I know exactly what Lily Allen means when she says this is the first tour she has done sober. The first sober version of anything is the scariest one. Then you do it, and it becomes yours.
