Tana Mongeau opens her two-year sobriety episode with a message for anyone who thinks she talks about being sober too much: they can gargle her balls.
I laughed out loud.
Then she spent the next hour proving exactly why she should keep talking about it.
From “Cancelled” to Brand Safe and Sober
If Mongeau isn’t on your radar, her following is huge. She has 9 million TikTok followers, 5.5 million on Instagram and 5.5 million on YouTube, per The Hollywood Reporter. She built that audience on chaotic, unfiltered storytelling, including 130 episodes of the podcast “Cancelled” with Brooke Schofield.
In May, she launched a solo show called “Brand Safe.” The title is a joke about her past. The show itself is serious about sobriety.
On Sept. 28, she released Episode 21, a solo hour titled “i’m 2 years sober: i’ve realized alcohol was only a part of the problem.”
That title says it all.
The Pink Cloud Burned Off in Year Two
Mongeau describes her first sober year as euphoric. Everything felt new, every milestone got celebrated, and the high of getting sober carried her.
Year two is when the high wore off and the harder stuff showed up: anxiety, OCD, rumination and a constant hunt for the next hit of dopamine.
Hardly anyone posts about this part. Year one gets the cake and the applause. Year two gets a quiet Tuesday where nothing is wrong and everything feels wrong.
Her Addiction Just Moved Somewhere Else
Here’s the line from the episode I’ll be quoting for years:
“My addiction had lost its original address, but it was still looking for a new place to live.”
Tana Mongeau
For Mongeau, the new addresses were doom-scrolling, shopping, vaping and overworking. She also talks about a three-week stretch of cannabis use earlier this year. She doesn’t spin it and she doesn’t throw out her alcohol sobriety date over it. She names it as the same compulsion looking for a new place to live.
That’s the most useful thing a famous person has said about sobriety all year.
I’ve been sober since May 1, 2006. Twenty years in, I can tell you the drink is never the whole story. It’s the first thing you remove. Then you find out what it was covering for.
Plenty of people stop drinking.
Staying sober is what changes your life.
Doing the Work Under the Drinking
Mongeau doesn’t stop at naming the problem. In therapy, she’s traced a lot of it back to growing up as the family “fixer,” the kid who managed everyone else’s chaos. She also talks about her last night drinking, in New York, and what came after.
She shares her next steps too. She plans to start going to 12 step meetings, which she’s never stuck with before, and to start medication her doctor recommended.
Sharing all of that with millions of young followers is generous. Plenty of her audience is drinking the way she used to. Now they’ve heard what it looks like when the person they grew up watching gets honest about what comes after quitting.
“That’s Enough”
She closes the episode with a moment of self-acceptance and a line worth sitting with:
“I’m two years sober today and that’s enough.”
Tana Mongeau
She doesn’t need a perfect record or a neat redemption story. Two years and the willingness to keep looking under the hood is enough.
