5 Reasons to Love “Joe,” the new single from Luke Combs

Seeing Grammy-nominated, CMA Entertainer of the Year winner, Luke Combs at the top of the charts and in music headlines is nothing new. But this time, the headlines are a little different. Surprisingly, Luke Combs has released, a single about alcoholism and music lovers are taking note. In a sea of songs about epic bashes, beer, and breakups, this standout is for the average” Joe”, living a simple, sober life.

    A Note FROM Luke Combs

Luke Comb’s Instagram post from 2/24/23
Luke Combs – “Joe” (Live from the Grand Ole Opry)

5 Reasons Why We DO Love it

    1. Luke Combs Sees Sober People– Sober but not boring. Many people in recovery still love to see live music. We endure rowdy crowds, loud talking, and people spilling beer on us just to be part of this experience. Going to a show and having a song dedicated to us and the obstacles we face would be AMAZING! This also breaks down the stigma surrounding addiction. Unfortunately, there is still a significant amount of work to be done, but this certainly helps.
    2. There Are So Many Songs About Partying and Drinking. Luke Combs stopped to consider what people struggling with addiction might think about this. Well…. we think a lot of things. Sometimes we romanticize it and wish we could go back to the good days of having drinks with friends. We consider the many ways drinking is normalized and celebrated in our society. Then, we immediately think about the bad choices and even worse consequences almost always involved. We also think about our friends and family who have overcome the disease. We pray for those still battling addiction and remember those who lost the fight. Unfortunately, some think “FCK IT “and just go ahead and drink that frosty, cold beer in perpetual pursuit of the party or to feel a part of the everything again. We thank God that there is a solution ready and waiting for all those beauty queens and bar room brawlers who may need it someday. And then we try to enjoy the rest of the show. Hearing “Joe,” a song about recovery, would be a welcome break from the party anthems.
    3. “Joe” Reminds Us That People are Dealing with So Many Things We Can’t See – “Joe” wakes up, prays to The Lord, works ay his job, and talks with his friends. He is grateful and sober, and this is enough. However, what he overcame to get to that point is monumental. “Joe” is so many of us in recovery. Fighting the good fight to clean up the past, righting wrongs, still dealing with consequences from bad behavior long since changed, working to stay clean and connected to friends and a higher power. “Everything I can to stay between the lines. Some fall from grace; some lose their wings. Some find the peace salvation brings.” These song lyrics capture the battle and the inner strength that often go unseen.
    4. It’s a Great Song– With hit after hit, there is no question that Luke Combs is an exceptional talent. His rich tone is always easy on the ears, and “Joe” is slow and sweet like honey. The lyrics are authentic, clever and cover one man’s journey from addiction to salvation in under two minutes.
    5. “Here’s to Good Days and Better Tomorrows and a Light at the End of the Bottle.” This glorious chorus is full of hope, reflecting optimism and trust in the idea that life will get better in recovery. Instead of slipping into the darkness of addiction, which leads to the end, Joe sees the solution, the way out, and the end of his drinking. This is the light at the end of his bottle. Lastly, this is a great toast. I will be reciting this next time I raise a NA beer to cheers with my people.

    A Note TO Luke Combs

THANK YOU! You risked revocation of your “Country Music Card” by flipping the script on the typical party anthems. And the sober community is grateful. Singing about recovery to make people with addiction feel seen is brave and greatly appreciated. You certainly do get us! So here’s to making “Joe” another big hit.

    Sincerely,

    Your new fan for life

Luke Combs has been a favorite of mine, but now I love him more. I never thought about all of the “party” songs, but it’s so true. This is a great song and a great post about it. Thank you Lisa C
