What a Trip! How a Flight Delay Changed My Mindset – The 411 on Flight Nannying

One month ago, I stumbled across a TikTok of someone doing something called “flight nannying”. Essentially, bringing puppies or kittens in a carrier from a breeder to their new family. As those who know me know, I already do several Roundtrip flights a year just to keep my status on Alaska Airlines known as “mileage runs.” So, wait, I thought, I can fly puppies and kittens, get my flights paid for AND earn miles and a little extra cash for my time?? That’s a win -win if I ever saw one.

I made it a goal: get one of flight nannying gig within the next month.

I made it a goal: get one of flight nannying gig within the next month. And so, I did. After joining a Facebook group, speaking with an experienced flight nanny, she was kind enough to refer me some of her Seattle based leads. A month later, I answered the call and found myself on a flight to Chicago to pick up two Persian kittens.

The flight was a tight turnaround. Unfamiliar with how pet ticket policies work, I had to make a pet reservation for the return flight (on the same plane that was incoming) but the airline told me I had to go to the counter and pay the pet ticket in Chicago. There was no option to pay over the phone for a quick in and out of security. Long story short, I met the pet breeder, picked up the two kittens, get to the ticket counter and no one was there. Without a ticket, I couldn’t enter security. And when someone finally showed to the counter, my flight was already pushing out from the gate.

So here I was stuck in Chicago, I’m a pet sitter and I had dogs at home, who my partner was (reluctantly) willing to care for. And they weren’t going to pay for a hotel.

Starting anything for the first time is going to be difficult, it’s going to be stressful.

But I realized something. Starting anything for the first time is going to be difficult, it’s going to be stressful. That’s part of entrepreneurship and growing as a human being. But believe me I felt my stress levels peaking high. The next flight out wasn’t until the next morning, but the gate agent told me the next confirmed flight I could get on wasn’t for two days. I’m fortunate not to have had to fly standby much, so I wasn’t exactly sure what it would look like – could I make the next flight in the morning?

Walking to the Ohare Hilton, I asked for a room, took a shower and was prepared to face the unexpected. I was finally able to get a confirmed flight for the next morning (thank you CS agent) and get a few hours’ sleep with the kittens next to me.

The next morning, I set my alarm, made it to the gate, attempted to make a pet reservation and the agent told me it wasn’t letting her. With the flight already boarding, she directed me to go to security and see if they could help me reserve a pet there. I’d tried to follow the rules as much as possible, but at this point, I figured asking forgiveness and getting home was better than asking permission and being stranded, so I boarded the flight with my stowaway kittens, nervous as a drug dealer crossing the US/ Mexico border.

“Got a critter with you?” The man seated next to me in the aisle asked curiously. “Yes” I replied nervously, hoping he wouldn’t bring more attention to the two furry stowaways under the seat in front of me.

Whether it’s a side hustle or a full-time gig, a career as a pet flight nanny is a thrilling journey that involves more than just a love for animals—it requires a blend of organization, compassion, and a genuine understanding of the unique needs of our furry friends. If you’re considering joining the ranks of pet flight nannies, this guide is your boarding pass to a rewarding adventure. So, fasten your seatbelts, aspiring pet guardians, here are some tips to get started on this high-flying career!

    1. Understand the Responsibilities:

Becoming a pet flight nanny means taking on the responsibility of ensuring the safe and comfortable transportation of pets. This involves caring for animals during transit, managing logistics, and being attuned to their well-being throughout the journey. It’s a role that requires patience, attention to detail, and a deep love for our four-legged companions. If you have both travel experience and experience with pets, both are a great start for the experience you need!

    2. Research Industry Requirements:

Before taking flight, familiarize yourself with the regulations and requirements of pet transportation. Different airlines and countries may have specific guidelines regarding the transport of animals. Be well-versed in the necessary paperwork, health certificates, and any quarantine regulations that may apply. When flying with a pet in-cabin, call your preferred airline to determine what information or reservations are needed in advance.

    3. Gain Pet Handling Experience:

Having hands-on experience with different types of pets is invaluable. Volunteer at local animal shelters, offer pet-sitting services, or work with a veterinarian to gain a thorough understanding of pet behavior, handling techniques, and basic healthcare needs. This practical experience will enhance your confidence and competence as a pet flight nanny. Don’t forget to document your time with referral letters and photos!

    4. Establish a Reliable Network:

Building connections within the pet transportation industry is key. Establish relationships with reputable breeders to create a network that supports your venture. Reliable contacts can provide insights, referrals, and collaboration opportunities that contribute to a successful flight nannying business. Start by reaching out to some via social media or finding some opportunities in Facebook groups geared towards pet transport.

    5. Decide on your why:

Every successful venture starts with a solid plan. First, decide what you want to get out of this. It could be for profit or just to earn miles and status on an airline. Keep in mind that many who do this have flight priveledges, so you may be competing with lower offers if you’re trying to profit. Or if you have an existing flight, it’s possible to have it paid for if someone needs transport between your two cities. Outline your business objectives, target audience, pricing structure, and marketing strategies. Consider the logistical aspects, such as transportation, accommodations, and handling equipment.

    6. Invest in Pet Safety and Comfort:

Ensure the safety and comfort of your furry passengers by investing in proper equipment and amenities. Quality carriers, cozy bedding, and stress-relief items can make a significant difference in the travel experience for pets. Prioritize their well-being, and you’ll build a positive reputation as a caring and responsible pet flight nanny.

    7. Marketing and Branding:

Create a strong online presence to market your services. Develop a user-friendly website, utilize social media platforms, and consider partnerships with pet-related businesses. Positive client testimonials and engaging content can help establish trust and credibility in the competitive world of pet transportation.

    Conclusion:

For whatever your reason to choose to be a pet flight nanny, it’s not just a job; it’s a calling for those who find joy in ensuring the well-being of our furry companions. With a blend of knowledge, experience, and a passion for animals, you’re ready to take flight on this rewarding career path. So spread your wings, aspiring pet flight nannies, and let the journey begin! ????✈️ #PetFlightNanny #AnimalTransportation #TakingFlightWithPets
