Do you often find yourself drinking NA beer and wondering why there is no niche market specifically for metalheads who don’t drink? Well, wonder no more! Your headbanging prayers have been answered. KittiePig is a brand born from two heavy rock bands: Kittie and We Are Pigs. The goal is to fill a gap that they observed in those specific venues catering to the low-end roars and high-end guitars.
This week, we are drinking Saska Berry Blonde by Kittie Pig. Expectations are high, as the marketing for this brew is one of the best things I have ever seen. When I first saw them, they claimed to be made with “blood, spit, and tears,” which happen to be some of my favorite things out there! From a beer POV, it’s nice to see an initial release under the umbrella of blonde instead of the typical IPA. I will say, though, that it is funny to have a traditionally soft flavor profile in a berry blonde for a heavy metal beer.
Upon first cracking this wonderfully decorated 16-ounce can, KittiePig delivers on the promise of berries. The aroma fills the air like I am about to host a juice-off in my kitchen. I’m not sure I have ever had a saska berry (saskatoon, technically), but I am all in if they taste as good as this smells. The aroma pours out a bit more as the beer meets the glass and shows its true colors.
The Saska Berry Blonde from KittiePig pours a light and crystal clear yellow, ripe with a crisp, white head foaming gently at the top of the uber-light-colored beverage. Bringing the brew to my mouth hole, I get the height of the aroma of the berries, and I am a bit skeptical that I am about to drink juice. When it finally reaches my slimy mouth muscle, it has a different taste. The berries and sweetness are front and forward, but there is a balance to the sweetness with something that tickles the tiny tongue tendrils on the sides of my mouth. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it feels like a roasted malt of a specific variety.
Untappd gives Saska Berry Blonde by KittiePig an average rating of 3.75 out of 5, and for a berry-based blonde, I would put it up there near a 4.0. It’s not my specific taste, as I am a hop-heavy whore, but for those looking for something with a lighter mouth feel and an accent of sweetness in the form of Saskatoon berries, this may be your dream girl. I’ll be following these guys closely and hoping for a sour sooner rather than later.
