The Creative Independent just dropped Sober 21. A “Zine” of essays by, and interviews with, sober musicians. It’s a free resource for musicians who want to begin or are on the journey of getting clean and sober from drugs and alcohol.

My friend Laura sent this to me today. She is an avid reader and follower of The Creative Independent. I was not familiar with this online resource and I was thrilled she thought to send this my way. Immediately, I was drawn into the oh-so simplistic design of the website, with its colored blocks and familiar font. Aesthetically, it’s the polar opposite of The Sober Curator. I loved the ad-free space with minimalistic design. The lack of distracting graphics allowed my eyes to focus on the importance of the weight of the words that were so eloquently pulled together.

The very first story in Sober 21 is by a female musician from Seattle. I was captivated by the end of the first paragraph. Are you a Run DMC and Beastie Boy fan? This free download will be extra special. I’m not going to spoil it for you. Go check it out for yourself.

Are you a musician? Newly sober? Simply love binging as much recovery content as you can? Checking out this “Zine” is going to be well worth your time. I am a firm believer that healing occurs through storytelling. My personal experiences over the years have shown me that I can continue to heal not only through sharing my story, but also by reading, listening to, and absorbing the details of other peoples stories. Perhaps because it is inside these stories we find the powerful string that connects us. We find hope.

    Sober 21

The zine brings together a group of musicians (21 to be exact) that varies in age, gender, race, sexual orientation, musical styles, amount of time sober, and years in the music industry. What they have in common is that they were actively addicted to alcohol and drugs, and that they share here that they are now free from that addiction.

    What is TCI?

The Creative Independent (TCI) is a growing resource of emotional and practical guidance for creative people, published ad-free by Kickstarter, a public-benefit corporation. They produce interviews, wisdom, and guides that illuminate the trials and tribulations of living a creative life, as told by working artists—including writers, musicians, designers, visual artists, and others. Their goal is to feed and grow the community of people who create.
