Getting Sober After 50: Why It’s Never Too Late to Recover

A lot of people think that by the time they hit 50, it’s too late to change. That the damage is done. That they’re too set in their ways, too far gone, too old to start over … blah, blah, blah …
But to that I say: Hell no!

I got sober the first time at 29 — two days before my 30th birthday. I was sober for almost 13 years, through pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the beautiful, exhausting early years of raising children. Then, at some point, I lost myself and became lost in the abyss of alcohol for over 13 more years.

But at 56 years old, I got sober again. And I have never looked back.

When you get sober in the second half of your life, you’re not starting over. You’re coming in with everything you already know!

At 56, I had lived. I had loved, lost, survived, and accumulated a wisdom that no 25-year-old in early recovery possesses. I knew what I was fighting for … my kids, my eventual grandchildren, my partner, my health. The person I always thought I could be, with all my potential.

Some of the most inspiring sobriety stories in the world belong to people who didn’t make the change until they were older. Denzel Washington got sober at 60 years old. Washington spent 15 years drinking two bottles of fine wine every day. He built a 10,000-bottle wine cellar in his home and convinced himself that because it was “good” wine, it wasn’t really a problem! He describes the slow, subtle creep of his alcohol dependence: “I had this idea that if I drank only the best wine it was OK … but then one day I looked in the mirror and thought: I am wasting my days either drunk or hungover … There are 365 days in a year, how many days do I want to waste?”

Samuel L. Jackson was in his 40s when he finally got sober. He was a struggling actor with a crack cocaine addiction. After several overdoses, his 8-year-old daughter found him passed out on the floor and he decided enough was enough. He reminds us: “It’s never too late to become who you were meant to be!”

Sir Elton John got sober at 43 after a battle with alcohol and drugs that nearly ended his life.
“If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead … sobriety gave me everything!”

Brad Pitt got sober in his early 50s. He describes something that many late-in-life sober people recognize immediately — the return of feeling. “I’ve got my feelings again. I think that’s part of the human challenge: You either deny them all of your life or you answer them and evolve.”

This is absolutely one of the great gifts that I found getting sober later in life. I spent years using alcohol to numb out, to take away the pain. And when I finally got sober, I found that life wasn’t the overwhelming and painful mess I anticipated … (well not all the time anyway) … it became more vivid! I started noticing things that I had stopped seeing. Colors were brighter, birdsong more beautiful, sunsets spectacular. I remember watching the sunset with my sons and I started crying at the beauty. My younger son asked me why I was sad, I hugged him and told him that I wasn’t sad, that I was grateful beyond measure!

I got sober at 29. I got sober again at 56. And the second time, I came to it with something I didn’t have the first time: the full knowledge of exactly what I was losing, and the unshakeable certainty of what I wanted back.

Denzel Washington put it better than I ever could:

“When I turned 60, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘This is it! I want to hone my mind, body, and spirit and be the best me I can.'”

    Denzel Washington

That’s how I felt at 56: this is it! I didn’t want to waste any more of my remaining days. I decided that I could do it, that it was not too late to become who I was meant to be. When I got sober the second time, I wanted to share my experience. I wrote two books and I started running workshops for women who were still suffering. I started becoming the person I always hoped I might be.

Remember, the damage is not done, things are not too far gone.

Is there still time? Hell yes!

Is it too late to get sober after 50?
Absolutely not! Getting sober after 50 can actually be advantageous because you bring decades of life experience, wisdom, and clarity about what you’re fighting for. Many people successfully recover in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. You’re not starting over—you’re building on everything you already know about yourself and life.

What are the benefits of getting sober later in life?
Getting sober after 50 comes with unique advantages: you have accumulated wisdom and life experience, clearer motivations (like family, health, and legacy), better understanding of what truly matters, and often more stable living situations. You’re also more likely to have developed coping skills and emotional maturity that can support your recovery journey.

How common is alcohol addiction in people over 50?
Alcohol use disorders are surprisingly common among older adults, often developing or worsening later in life due to factors like retirement, loss of loved ones, health issues, or social isolation. Many people don’t realize their drinking has become problematic until their 50s or 60s, making recovery at this age both necessary and achievable.

Can you recover from years of heavy drinking after age 50?
Yes, recovery is possible regardless of how long you’ve been drinking heavily. While some physical damage may be permanent, many health improvements begin within weeks of sobriety. The brain’s neuroplasticity allows for healing and positive changes even later in life. Focus on what you can control moving forward rather than past regrets.

What celebrities got sober after 50?
Several notable figures achieved sobriety later in life, including Denzel Washington who got sober at 60 after drinking two bottles of wine daily for 15 years. These stories demonstrate that successful recovery is possible at any age and that it’s never too late to reclaim your life and reach your full potential.

How do you stay motivated to quit drinking in your 50s?
Focus on what you’re fighting for: your health, family relationships, potential grandchildren, and the person you know you can become. Use your life experience as motivation—you understand the value of time and don’t want to waste precious years. Consider the legacy you want to leave and the example you want to set.

What should I expect when getting sober after 50?
Expect both challenges and advantages. You may face age-related health concerns but also benefit from greater emotional maturity and clearer priorities. Physical recovery may take longer, but you likely have better coping strategies and support systems. Many find that sobriety after 50 brings unexpected joy, energy, and a renewed sense of purpose.
