In our fast-paced world, finding moments of peace and balance is crucial, and alternate nostril breathing has become an invaluable practice in my life. As someone deeply committed to wellness, I invite you to explore this ancient yogic technique known as Nadi Shodhan Pranayama. It has enriched my well-being, helping me find mental calmness, energy and hormonal balance, and I’m excited to share its profound benefits and practical applications with you.
During my yoga journey, I discovered the profound philosophy behind Nadi Shodhan Pranayama. This technique, rooted in ancient yogic traditions, promotes a calm and peaceful mind. Pranayama, meaning “breathing technique” in Sanskrit, is an ancient Indian breath technique that involves controlling the timing, duration and frequency of your breath. It’s also known as yogic breathing. It is designed to balance the energy flow within the body. The practice acknowledges the energetic differences between the left and right nostrils, offering profound insights into our mental and emotional states.
Understanding the Feminine and Masculine Energies
In yogic philosophy, the left nostril is associated with the moon, cooling and feminine energy, while the right nostril channels with the sun, warmth and masculine energy. Recognizing these attributes has deepened my self-understanding and awareness of my energy dynamics. The left nostril relates to nurturing, inward-focused energy, whereas the right nostril embraces outward expression. This awareness has empowered me to regulate my emotions and maintain balance in my life.

Masculine: Sun, bright, direct, action, forward energy, penetration, dominate, honed, aim, focus, fire, push, strike, go for it, defend, adrenaline, protect, build, shelter.
Feminine: Moon, dark, moist, mysterious, void, receiving, open, unknown, gathering, pull, gravitate, wait, nurture, embrace, feel, relax, Love.
Prompts:
Where in my life am I more in flow with my masculine energy?
Where in my life am I more in flow with my feminine energy?
Would I want this to change? How so?
Guide to Alternate Nostril Breathing
Let me guide you through how I incorporate alternate nostril breathing into my daily routine. Comfort is key, so I find a comfortable seated position, focusing on staying aligned and relaxed. Using my fingers to alternate nostril pressure, I begin the breathing cycle, switching sides with each inhale and exhale. This pattern helps me balance my energy and improve my focus. You can see how in this reel or use this guided audio practice.
The benefits of regular alternate nostril breathing practice have been immense for me. From calming my central nervous system to enhancing relaxation and hormonal balance, this technique offers a simple yet powerful way to maintain mental and emotional equilibrium. For women, especially, it provides a natural, empowering tool for holistic well-being and ease of perimenopausal symptoms.
What makes this technique truly special is its adaptability to fit various parts of my day. Whether upon waking, before bed, or as part of a meditation session, alternate nostril breathing effortlessly integrates into my daily routine. I’ve found a version that suits my lifestyle, and I encourage you to do the same. Even a brief session of alternate nostril breathing brings noticeable benefits. Think planes, trains and automobiles! You just need a few rounds to reset.
Nadi Shodhan Pranayama has become a cornerstone of my wellness journey. Amidst the complexities of modern life, it offers a powerful path to self-awareness and well-being. If you’re new to yoga or breathing techniques, or even if you’re experienced, I encourage you to incorporate alternate nostril breathing into your daily practice. Challenge yourself to try it for seven days and witness the transformative effects for yourself. This practice, with its timeless wisdom, invites you to embrace the potential for inner harmony and vitality.
