There are cookies that are gluten-free and vegan and have absolutely no right tasting this good. And yet, here we are.
Pacific Northwest Cookie Company makes those cookies. I know the family behind the company personally, and this Sober October, I’m putting their cookies on your radar. Friendship may get you a seat at my table. The cookies have to earn their own.
These do.
The Part Where I Admit I Had No Expectations
PNW Cookie Co. started with a family cookie recipe and a reason to rethink it. When a family member’s severe food allergies and intolerances meant the original recipe no longer worked, the family went back to the kitchen. Not to make something that technically qualified as a cookie. To make something worth eating.
They spent months testing a vegan, gluten-free version, determined to keep the flavor and texture that made the original worth passing around in the first place.
I know these people. I’ve seen how they operate. So when they handed me a box, I took one, fully prepared to be supportive and say something diplomatic.
I did not need to say something diplomatic.
Big Cookie Energy
PNW Cookie Co.’s cookies are vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free. They’re also generously sized. The company describes them as two servings each, which sounds like a private matter between you and your cookie.
What gets me is the taste. These are the kind of cookies where you hand one to somebody and wait for their reaction before mentioning the vegan and gluten-free part.
Surprise. Your skepticism has crumbs on it.
Six Flavors, Plenty of Opinions
The Cookie Monster Box of 6 includes one of each:
- Chocolate Chip
- Double Chocolate
- Molasses
- Oatmeal & Raisin
- Peanut Butter
- Snickerdoodle
The variety box is $27.95.
This has sober book club written all over it. Everyone samples the cookies, someone defends oatmeal raisin with unnecessary intensity, and eventually we remember we were supposed to discuss chapter seven.
For people with firm cookie loyalties, there’s also a build-your-own box of six. I appreciate a company that understands some of us arrive with opinions.
Pumpkin Has Entered the Chat
October also gets a seasonal contender: The Pumpkin-Doodle, the company’s limited-edition pumpkin cookie. Availability is seasonal, so check the product page before planning your fall cookie spread.
My proposed setting: something warm to drink, a blanket that has completely taken over the couch, and Practical Magic on the television.
Some people decorate for fall. Some people become fall. We respect both approaches.
Sober October Deserves a Cookie Plate
One of my favorite things about sober life is how much pleasure there is in the small stuff. Good food. Funny friends. An evening that starts with “come over for a little bit” and turns into three hours of catching up.
A cookie tasting fits right in.
A few flavors cut into pieces. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. The good mugs. A playlist that somehow becomes a heated discussion about ’90s music.
That’s an evening I want on my calendar. In fact, that’s why we’ve added SOBER SWAP to our monthly virtual events list BACKSTAGE. Learn more about that here: SOBER SWAP BACKSTAGE! Bring one thing. Leave with everybody else’s good taste.
And if you’re heading to someone else’s gathering, a box of cookies makes a thoughtful host gift. Bonus points for bringing something people can open and share while you’re still there.
Where to Find PNW Cookies
The full lineup is available at pnwcookies.com. The company recommends freezing the cookies for storage and thawing them when you’re ready to enjoy them.
If you’re shopping around specific food allergies, review the ingredient information before choosing your flavors.
Consider this your introduction to a family I know and cookies I’m very happy to talk about. Feel free to slide into my DMs and let me know which flavor is your favorite.
Sober October, with a side of snickerdoodle? That’s my kind of seasonal programming.
