Movies about addiction in the 1980s were somewhat groundbreaking for their willingness to show drinking and drug use unglamorously. But, looking back, these films often mistook misery for insight. They often showed rock bottom as a kind of tragic strength and treated addiction as a moral or existential fault. Revisiting them today is less an exercise in nostalgia than in noticing the gaps (and that’s not even talking about the big hair and bad style!). Speaking of big hair and ’80s style, let’s start with Jane Fonda in The Morning After, which ironically opens with women in spandex doing aerobics:

    Watch on Amazon Prime

    The Morning After (1986)

Jane Fonda plays a blackout-drinking actress who wakes up next to a corpse. The film uses her alcoholism mostly as a plot engine for “Hitchcock-esque” mystery rather than a subject in its own right. Fonda’s addiction functions as a symptom of her general disarray: glamorous, chaotic, tied to her faded-star vanity, rather than a disease with its own logic. The film flirts with consequence (the blackouts, the professional collapse, possible murder) but never really sits with recovery as a process; sobriety arrives more as a plot resolution than a lived reckoning.

    Ironweed (1987)

Although Ironweed was made in the ’80s, because it takes place during the 1930s, we don’t have the same style missteps of The Morning After. In Ironweed, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep play homeless alcoholics during Depression-era Albany, New York. The film is committed to grinding poetic misery. There are literal ghosts who trail Nicholson’s character as manifestations of guilt. But therein lies the problem: Ironweed treats addiction as a kind of gothic curse, an existential punishment for past sins. Their addiction is full of guilt, shame, and no escape. It’s beautifully acted and visually haunting, but it offers no real understanding of why these people drink, beyond the tragedy that happened once and now they must suffer forever. Addiction becomes a literary device, a permanent, almost mythic state; there is no possibility of change.

Movie Night Sobees Score: 3 out of 5

    Barfly (1987)

On Barfly, Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway’s romance practically markets alcoholism as an art form. The film takes place in ‘present day’ (late ’80s) Los Angeles. The film’s skid-row barflies are witty, self-aware, and defiantly unbothered by the wreckage around them. They wear their addiction as a badge of authenticity; a rejection of bourgeois respectability. Barfly conflates functional self-destruction with countercultural cool. The film’s swagger seems like a romantic vision of what alcoholism looks like, written by someone who never actually went through it.

    Drugstore Cowboy (1989)

Drugstore Cowboy is the grittiest of these four films. Matt Dillon plays a pharmacy-robbing addict, who had intense trauma in his background, real reasons for wanting to escape reality. The film doesn’t flinch from the chaos or the superstitious magical thinking that drives his life. On location in Portland, Oregon, the film serves as a gritty, nostalgic time capsule of the city’s blue-collar era. Dillon’s redemption arrives almost entirely through willpower and a change of scenery, with minimal acknowledgment of the actual infrastructure that real recovery depends on. It’s the most humane of these films, but still reflects an ’80s assumption that getting clean is fundamentally a private decision requiring willpower, rather than a process requiring real support systems.

Movie Night Sobees Score: 3 out of 5

Drugstore Cowboy (1989) TRAILER [HD 1080p]

Taken together, these four films reveal a decade that was fascinated by addiction as spectacle: tragic, romantic, chaotic, mysterious, but not yet equipped, culturally or clinically, to understand it as a disease. I think they are worth watching precisely because of that gap: they show us what addiction looked like to an audience before terms like “recovery culture,” “harm reduction,” or “sober curious” entered the vocabulary. That’s the value of returning to them now, not as models, but almost as artifacts of an era we’ve moved beyond.

How does ‘The Morning After’ portray addiction?
‘The Morning After’ uses addiction as a plot device for mystery, showing alcoholism as part of a character’s chaotic life rather than addressing recovery as a process.

What makes ‘Ironweed’ different from other ’80s addiction films?
‘Ironweed’ is set in the 1930s, avoiding ’80s fashion missteps. It portrays addiction as a gothic curse, focusing on guilt and shame without offering hope for change.

Why is ‘Barfly’ criticized in terms of addiction portrayal?
‘Barfly’ romanticizes alcoholism as a countercultural lifestyle, presenting it as an art form rather than a serious issue, which can seem disconnected from the realities of addiction.

What approach does ‘Drugstore Cowboy’ take on addiction?
‘Drugstore Cowboy’ offers a gritty view of addiction, focusing on personal trauma and chaotic lifestyles, but suggests that recovery is a matter of willpower rather than structured support.

What common theme is observed in the portrayal of addiction in 1980s films?
1980s films often depicted addiction as tragic and romantic, lacking cultural and clinical understanding of it as a disease, and failing to show realistic recovery processes.
