75+ Fun Things to Do Sober: Activities, Events & Ideas for Sober Living

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me, “But what do you actually do on a Friday night?” I’d have enough nickels to buy out the entire inventory of a high-end NA bottle shop.

There is a persistent, slightly annoying myth that sobriety is a one-way ticket to Boredom Town, Population: You. People think we just sit in dimly lit rooms, clutching lukewarm water, and staring at the wall until it’s socially acceptable to go to bed at 9:00 PM.

Spoiler alert: They’re wrong.

Sobriety isn’t about losing your social life; it’s about finally having a life worth remembering the next morning. It’s about swapping the “hangxiety” for hobbies that actually stick, experiences that land, and connections that don’t evaporate by Sunday brunch.

This isn’t a list of things to “fill the void.” This is a roadmap to the life you actually want — the one that doesn’t require a hangover to be interesting. Whether you’re a newcomer figuring out what the hell to do with all this newfound time, or a seasoned pro looking for fresh inspiration, we’ve curated the ultimate guide to sober fun.

Buckle up. Here are 75+ things to do sober that don’t involve a hangover — or an apology text the next day.

Check out HAPPY EVERY HOUR for NA beer, cider, wine, spirits, ready-to-drink reviews and more!

HAPPY EVERY HOUR: Master the Art of The Sip

Just because we aren’t drinking booze doesn’t mean we want to drink “kid drinks.” While some of us never drank for the taste to begin with, the NA beverage movement is booming. Your glass can still be half full, just make sure there’s not vodka in it.

Host a blind NA beer tasting. Grab a few cans of Go Brewing’s Prophets NA Hazy IPA and see if your friends can tell the difference. Spoiler: they probably can’t, and watching them try is half the fun.

Mixology Night. Level up your barware and craft a complex mocktail using fresh botanicals. You’ll feel like a fancy bartender without the sticky floors or creepy regulars.

Probiotic Pop Party. Swap the sugary sodas for Good Wolf Probiotic Sodas — your gut will thank you, and you’ll actually have energy the next day instead of a sugar crash.

Tea Cupping. It’s like wine tasting but with more caffeine and zero regrets. Plus, you’ll actually remember which one was your favorite.

Garnish Like a Boss. Spend an afternoon learning how to dehydrate citrus and make fancy salt rims. Your drinks will look Instagram-worthy, and you’ll have a new party trick.

NA Wine Review. Try a sparkling Rosé and celebrate sobriety without the buzz. Bonus points if you do it with friends and argue about tasting notes like wine snobs.

Botanical Infusions. Make your own alcohol-free “spirits” using glycerin and herbs. It’s like being a witch, but the potion actually tastes good.

Coffee Flight. Visit three local shops in one morning and find the best espresso in town. You’ll be buzzing, but in the best way possible. We love Brainwashed and Pink Cloud.

Ginger Beer Shootout. Find the spiciest one that makes your back teeth tingle. No beer? No problem. Pass the ginger! We are big fans of Betty Buzz and Reed’s.

Themed Barware Shopping. Hit up vintage shops for the coolest glassware you’ve ever seen. Because presentation matters, and your drinks deserve better than a Solo cup. Make sure to check out The Happy Traveler for vintage travel drinkwear sets.

Master the Shrub. Learn to make drinking vinegars that add that missing “bite” to your NA drinks. It’s tangy, it’s sophisticated, and it makes you feel like a culinary genius.

Smoothie Bowl Art. Because food that looks like a painting tastes better. And honestly? The process is meditative as hell.

Kombucha Brewing. Become the scientist of your own kitchen. Warning: you will become insufferable about your SCOBY.

Visit a Sober Bar. Seek out zero-proof lounges in your city. They exist, they’re cool, and the crowd is way more interesting than your average happy hour. Top 36 Non-Alcoholic Bars & Bottle Shops in the USA

Hot Cocoa Bar. Go wild with marshmallows, peppermint, and whipped cream. It’s cozy, it’s indulgent, and nobody’s judging you for having three cups.

Check out SOBER ENTERTAINMENT for books, movies, TV shows, sober celebs + pop culture, and so much more!

ENTERTAINMENT: The Mindful Binge & Sober Pop Culture

We love a good story. Whether it’s on the screen, in a book, or coming through your headphones, entertainment hits different when you aren’t nodding off halfway through.

The Mindful Binge. Start a new series like Margo’s Got Money Troubles and actually remember the plot twists. No more waking up three episodes deep with no idea how you got there.

QUITLIT Deep Dive. Join a book club or start your own. Check out our list of Sober Curator contributors who are published authors. Reading about recovery never felt so literary.

Sober Pop Culture Trivia. Host a night dedicated to famous sober icons and movies. You’ll be shocked how many of your favorites are in recovery — and how much you actually know when your brain isn’t foggy. Check out our Sober Celebrities section for ideas.

Vinyl Night. Dust off the record player and listen to a full album, no skipping. Let the music breathe. Let yourself breathe with it.

Movie Marathon. Pick a franchise (hello, Goonies!) and watch them all back-to-back. Fun fact: You can even peek inside the Goonies house owner’s story. And yes, you’ll stay awake for the whole thing.

Celebrity Memoir Audiobooks. There’s something therapeutic about hearing a sober celebrity memoir read by the author. It’s like having a famous friend whisper their secrets directly into your ear. Get TWO FREE WEEKS of Audible on us!

Comedy Clubbing. Hit a show like Dopeywood for laughs that don’t require a two-drink minimum. You’ll actually remember the punchlines — and you won’t be the drunk person heckling from the back.

Podcast Binge. Find a recovery-adjacent podcast that makes you feel seen. There’s something magic about hearing your own thoughts come out of someone else’s mouth.

Write a Fan Letter. Reach out to a sober creator who inspires you. Connection beats consumption every single time.

Group Photo Shoot Challenge. Grab your friends, assign each person a color, and spend the afternoon hunting for shots that feature only that hue. The person with the best photo wins something Pantone-branded. It’s creative, competitive, and you’ll see your city in a whole new way.

Museum After Hours. Many museums have “quiet nights” that are perfect for sober wandering. You can actually absorb the art instead of just Instagramming it.

Outdoor Cinema. Grab a blanket and some snacks for a movie under the stars. It’s romantic, it’s nostalgic, and the only thing you’re drinking is overpriced lemonade.

Learn an Instrument. That guitar in the corner isn’t going to play itself. And now that your hands are steady and your brain is clear? You might actually get good.

Live Music. Go to a concert and actually hear the music without the beer-line interruptions. You’ll leave with ringing ears, not regrets.

Documentary Night. Learn about something obscure, like the hidden history of addiction in America. Knowledge is the new buzz. Movie Night with The Sober Curator has many documentary recommendations.

Broadway (or Local Theater). Get dressed up for a night of high drama. You’ll feel fancy, you’ll stay awake, and you won’t accidentally fall asleep during Act Two. TSC loves LIVE THEATRE

Conspiracy Theory Power Point Party. Pull out your tinfoil for a hat-making station and gather your nearest and dearest for a night of PowerPoint presentations featuring your favorite trending conspiracies. Participants presenting need to keep their pitch to 10 minutes or under.

Check out SOBER TRAVEL for sober retreats calendar, travel tips, and places to visit.

TRAVEL & EVENTS: See the World With Clear Eyes

Traveling sober is a superpower. You’re the first one up for the sunrise hike, you actually find your hotel room on the first try, and you remember every single moment instead of piecing it together from blurry photos. Go for a scroll through our Sober Events calendar, which features events coast to coast.

Sober in NYC. Take a bite out of the Big Apple. From NA speakeasies to morning raves, NYC is a sober playground — and you’ll actually be awake to enjoy it.

Book a Sober Retreat. Recharge your batteries with people who “get it.” No awkward explanations, no temptation, just pure connection and rest.

National Park Tour. See the stars without the blur. There’s nothing like standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon with a completely clear head and realizing how small your problems actually are.

Themed Road Trip. Visit the “World’s Largest” of anything within a 200-mile radius. It’s ridiculous, it’s Instagram gold, and you’ll have stories for days.

Sober Cruise. Yes, they exist, and the “Friends of Bill W.” meetings usually have the best views. Plus, you’ll never miss a port because you’re too hungover to get off the boat.

Volunteer Travel. Give back while you explore. You’ll see places tourists never do, and you’ll come home changed in the best way.

Festival Hopping. Go to a music festival and stay in the “Sober Tent” or “Yellow Balloon” areas. The energy is better, the people are real, and you’ll actually remember the headliner.

Staycation. Book a local boutique hotel and treat yourself to room service and a long bath. Sometimes the best trip is the one where you don’t have to pack.

Photography Walk. Explore your own city through a lens. You’ll notice architecture, light, and details you’ve walked past a thousand times but never actually saw.

Food Truck Friday. Eat your way through the local scene. Your taste buds work better now — use them.

Sunrise Hiking. There is no better “high” than the first light on a mountain peak. And you’ll actually make it to the trailhead on time.

Visit a Crystal Shop. Even if you don’t “believe,” the vibes (and the decor) are immaculate. Plus, it’s a great excuse to buy yourself something shiny.

Sober Convention. Attend a roundup or a recovery conference for a massive shot of inspiration. You’ll leave with new friends, new ideas, and proof that you’re not doing this alone.

Farmers Market Morning. Get the best produce before the “brunch crowd” even wakes up. You’ll feel smug, healthy, and like you’ve got your life together.

Amusement Parks. Ride the rollercoasters with a stomach that isn’t already upset. Turns out, spinning in circles is way more fun when you’re not also fighting nausea.

Check out SPIRITUAL GANGSTER for sober astrology, stoicism, yoga, and more.

SPIRITUAL GANGSTER: Feed Your Soul

Recovery is a spiritual journey, but that doesn’t mean it has to be stuffy. We’re all about that “Spiritual Gangster” life: mixing ancient wisdom with modern swag. This is where you get quiet enough to hear yourself think — and maybe even like what you hear.

Tarot Reading. Pull a card for the day and see what the universe is whispering. Even if you think it’s all nonsense, the ritual of pausing and reflecting? That’s the real magic. Looking for other card deck options? We’ve got you.

Yoga in the Park. Connect your breath to your movement. It’s free, it’s grounding, and you’ll leave feeling like you just hit the reset button on your entire nervous system. Fun fact: Yoga is more than poses.

Daily Meditation. Even five minutes makes a difference. Jen Hatmaker’s Awake is a great place to start. Your brain will thank you, and so will everyone who has to deal with you.

Journaling. Get those “funny sober quotes” and deep thoughts out of your head and onto paper. You’ll be amazed what comes out when you’re not censoring yourself.

Sound Baths. Let the vibrations wash away the stress of the week. It sounds woo-woo until you try it, and then you’re a believer.

Stargazing. Realize how small your problems are compared to the cosmos. Bonus: it’s free therapy with a better view.

Aromatherapy. Use a Füm essential oil inhaler for a moment of calm. It’s like a cigarette break without the cancer — just pure sensory reset.

Vision Boarding. Cut up some magazines and dream big. It’s arts and crafts meets manifestation, and it actually works if you let it. Check out the Unpolished column by Sober Curator Krysty Krywko for prompts.

Forest Bathing. It’s just a fancy word for walking in the woods, but it works. Nature doesn’t ask you to explain yourself — it just lets you be. Bonus points if you get your bare feet in the grass.

Affirmation Mirrors. Write “It’s always the perfect day for a perfect day!” on your bathroom mirror in lipstick. Start your morning with intention instead of dread.

Horoscope Deep Dive. Check your birth chart and see why you are the way you are. It’s like therapy, but with planets.

Volunteer. Nothing fixes a bad mood like helping someone else. It gets you out of your head and into your heart.

Breathwork Sessions. Get high on your own supply (of oxygen). Seriously, this stuff is wild — and completely legal.

Candle Making. Scent your space with intention. Plus, homemade candles make great gifts for people who don’t know you’re secretly a spiritual gangster.

Midnight Prayer/Reflections. Find peace in the stillness. Whether you’re praying, meditating, or just sitting with your thoughts, the quiet hours have a magic all their own. Here Are 10 Serenity Prayer Alternatives.

Check out SOBER LIFESTYLE for dating, fashion, shopping, crafting and more.

LIFESTYLE: Dating, DIY, and Looking Dope

Sobriety is a glow-up. Your skin is clearer, your eyes are brighter, your bank account is fuller, and your energy? Through the roof. Let’s use all of that to build a life that actually reflects who you’re becoming.

Sober Dating App Adventure. Try apps like Loosid. Dating doesn’t have to suck — and it’s way easier when you’re not texting your ex at 2 AM because you’re lonely and three drinks deep.

DIY Denim. Grab some patches and turn your old jacket into a sober statement piece. It’s wearable art that tells your story without you having to say a word. A few years back, I took a bunch of old jeans and worked with my mom to make it into a quilt and it’s now my favorite blanket.

Sober Birthday Box. Celebrate milestones with Doughp’s Sober Birthday Box. You’ve earned it, and edible cookie dough > champagne any day.

Skincare Routine. Invest in yourself. Sobriety affects your eyesight and your skin — give them some love. You’ll glow from the inside out.

Thrifting. Find unique pieces that reflect the new, sober you. Your style is evolving — your closet should too.

Adult Bedtime Routine. Sleep is a luxury. Make it an event. Silk pillowcases, lavender spray, a good book — treat it like the sacred ritual it is. Read more: Why Adults Need Bedtime Routines

Fitness Challenges. Join a 30-day challenge and feel your strength grow. Not just physically, but mentally. Every rep is proof you can do hard things.

Sober Mom Collective. Find your village through virtual communities like the Sober Mom Collective. Parenting is hard enough — doing it sober with support makes all the difference.

Recovery Swag. Rock some Clean AF recovery clothing. Wear your sobriety like the badge of honor it is.

Room Makeover. Change your environment to reflect your internal growth. New you, new space. Out with the old energy, in with the intentional.

Gardening. Grow something from scratch. There’s something deeply healing about putting your hands in dirt and watching life emerge.

Board Game Night. Competitive spirit > Cocktails. You’ll actually remember who won, and the trash talk is way sharper when everyone’s sober.

Cooking Classes. Learn to make one signature dish that impresses everyone. Your dinner parties just got an upgrade.

Pet Adoption (or Volunteering). Animals are the ultimate sober companions. They don’t care about your past — they just want your presence.

Dance Party. Put on your favorite playlist and have a solo dance party in your kitchen. Get your sober boogie on! No one’s watching, and even if they were, you wouldn’t care.

COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING

At the end of the day, the “fun” part of sobriety isn’t just what you do — it’s who you become when you’re fully present for it.

You’re not “missing out” on the party. You ARE the party. And trust me, you’re way more fun to be around now. You’re sharper, funnier, more engaged, more you than you’ve ever been. The people who matter? They see it. They feel it. They want to be around it.

Connection is the opposite of addiction. Whether you’re hitting up sober events, grabbing coffee with a friend who gets it, or just texting someone at midnight because you’re grateful they exist — that’s where the magic lives. Not in the bottom of a glass. Not in the blur of a night you can’t remember.

The list is endless, but the choice is yours.

So what’s it gonna be? The sunrise hike? The NA tasting night? The solo dance party in your kitchen? The photo challenge with your crew? Pick one. Do it this weekend. Then come back and tell me how it went — because I want to hear about the life you’re building.

You’re not filling time. You’re reclaiming it.

XOXO,
Alysse, *AB That’s Me

What are fun things to do when you’re sober?

There are hundreds of fun activities to enjoy sober, from hosting NA beer tastings and mixology nights to exploring national parks, attending sober festivals, learning new hobbies like gardening or playing an instrument, and connecting with sober communities. Sobriety opens up opportunities for experiences you’ll actually remember — from sunrise hikes to comedy shows, cooking classes to vintage shopping. The key is finding activities that align with your interests and values, not just “filling time.”

How do I have fun on a Friday night without drinking?

Sober Friday nights can include hosting a themed movie marathon, trying a new restaurant or food truck, attending live music or comedy shows, organizing a board game night with friends, visiting a sober bar or NA speakeasy, taking a pottery or cooking class, or simply creating an elevated at-home experience with gourmet mocktails and good company. Many cities also offer sober events like morning raves, yoga sessions, and cultural experiences designed specifically for the alcohol-free community.

What do sober people do for entertainment?

Sober people engage in the same entertainment as everyone else — concerts, movies, theater, festivals, travel — but with the added benefit of being fully present and remembering the experience. Popular sober entertainment includes binge-watching shows mindfully, joining book clubs focused on recovery literature (QUITLIT), attending sober festivals and conventions, exploring museums and art galleries, listening to podcasts, learning instruments, and participating in creative hobbies like photography, writing, or crafting.

Are there sober social events and communities?

Yes! The sober community is growing rapidly with dedicated events, apps, and spaces. You can find sober festivals with designated “Sober Tent” or “Yellow Balloon” areas, sober bars and NA speakeasies in major cities, recovery conventions and roundups, sober retreats, and virtual communities like the Sober Mom Collective. Dating apps like Loosid and Club Pillar cater specifically to sober and sober-curious individuals. Many cities also host sober meetups, morning raves, and alcohol-free social gatherings.

How can I travel sober?

Traveling sober is easier than ever with the rise of sober-friendly destinations, cruises with “Friends of Bill W.” meetings, sober retreats, and alcohol-free travel groups. Tips for sober travel include researching sober-friendly accommodations, planning activities that don’t center around drinking (like sunrise hikes, food tours, cultural experiences), connecting with local recovery communities, and being the first one awake to enjoy your destination without a hangover. Many travelers find that sobriety enhances their experiences by allowing them to be fully present and engaged.

What are some spiritual practices for people in recovery?

Spiritual practices for recovery include daily meditation, journaling, yoga, breathwork, tarot or oracle card readings, sound baths, forest bathing (mindful walking in nature), aromatherapy, vision boarding, volunteering, stargazing, and creating intentional rituals like morning affirmations or evening reflections. These practices help build self-awareness, reduce stress, and create a sense of purpose and connection that supports long-term sobriety. The key is finding practices that resonate with your personal beliefs and lifestyle.

How do I meet other sober people?

You can meet other sober people through recovery meetings (AA, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery), sober social apps (Loosid, The Luckiest Club), local sober events and meetups, sober bars and cafes, recovery conventions and conferences, online communities and forums, sober fitness classes, volunteer organizations, and by simply being open about your sobriety in existing social circles. Many people find their sober community by attending events that align with their interests — whether that’s hiking groups, book clubs, or creative workshops — and connecting with others who share their values.
