I wanted to share an eye-opening episode on “Wellness as a Way of Life,” because I know so many of us, especially in recovery, struggle with our relationship to sugar. I dove into the intriguing relationship between alcohol, sugar and anxiety. It’s fascinating how these elements can impact our mood and overall well-being. Ultimately, I think understanding how these substances affect our body and mood helps us make better choices over time.
Here’s the scoop: Both sugar and alcohol trigger dopamine activation, giving us that warm, fuzzy feeling we all adore. But here’s the catch: This can lead to increased cortisol levels — the stress hormone — causing heightened anxiety. Who knew that a chocolate bar or a glass of wine could kickstart this cycle? It’s crucial to understand this relationship to break free from relying on sugar and alcohol to feel good.
I also discussed the concept of “hangxiety” — that familiar anxiety after a night out or a sweets binge. This is due to the way alcohol and sugar disrupt the brain’s chemical balance. So, if you’ve ever felt anxious after indulging, you’re definitely not alone!
One takeaway I’m really excited to share is the power of adding healthy fats, fiber-rich foods and nature’s candy (fruits!) into our diets to curb those sugar cravings. We talked about bringing in consistency, predictability and variety into our routines to satisfy our emotional needs.
If any of this resonates with you or if you’re curious for more details, tune in to the full episode. I’d love to hear your thoughts and whether you’ve noticed these patterns in your life. Let’s spark a conversation about shifting towards healthier choices.
