Eternally Amy: Exploring "The 12 Steps For Anyone Who Wants Them" Podcast

Welcome to my podcast series, “The 12 Steps For Anyone Who Wants Them.” In this series, I created over the last year,  I share insights, experiences, and perspectives on the 12 steps from my personal journey. Whether you’re familiar with AA meetings or simply curious about these steps, I hope you find a coupe valuable takeaways to take what you like, and leave the rest!

    Step 1: Admitting Powerlessness

Acknowledge that addiction has made life unmanageable. There is a power in admitting your powerlessness and coming to terms with an unmanageable life. But more importantly, what is the difference between powerlessness and helplessness?  There is certaintly a paradox is the word, and Amy is diving into the differences of feeling powerless and taking the power back.

Step 2: Believing in a Higher Power

Embrace the idea of a higher power that can restore sanity. How does insanity manifest itself in your life along the way? While examining the lack of emotional processing in Footloose, Amy pushes back against the idea that strength is not showing your emotions. One of the biggest obstacles to restoring your sanity can often be emotional repression and a lack of self-love.

    Step 3: Surrendering Control

Willingness to turn over control to a higher power for guidance. Building off of Step 2, which involves coming to believe in a power greater than oneself, the discussion centers on the key of willingness and how it can be a challenge to get out of one’s own way and let God handle things. Amy also touches on the “god problem” and how some 12-steppers can be turned off by the religious aspect of the program due to past experiences with the church.

Step 4: Taking a Moral Inventory

Honest self-reflection on past actions and character defects. Amy leads an exercise in taking inventory of existing resentments, and discusses how they can affect our well-being and relationships. She provides practical tips on freeing ourselves from lingering resentments, emphasizing the importance of honesty and self-reflection.

    Step 5: Admitting Wrongs

Share the results of the moral inventory with oneself and a trusted person. Step 5 explains the importance of having a sponsor in the recovery process and discusses how fears and resentments are often linked. Amy also emphasizes the need to understand the underlying reasons for our fears and take inventory of our sexual behavior to identify negative patterns or behaviors. This episode offers valuable insights and guidance for those navigating addiction and recovery.

Step 6: Being Ready to Change

Willingness to let go of character defects and shortcomings. Step 6 explores how, through self-reflection and personal growth, individuals can transform their negative traits into positive qualities, thereby enhancing their recovery journey and overall well-being.

    Step 7: Asking for Help

Humbly seek to remove shortcomings and improve character. Amy focuses on Step 7 of the 12-step program, where we humbly ask him to remove our shortcomings and handle difficult situations with humility.  Amy shares an exchange of letters between the founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung, and one of the founds of the 12-Step Program, Bill Wilson. Amy talks more about the concept of Individuation, and the concept of a person becoming their whole-self.

    Step 8: Making Amends

Compile a list of people harmed and be willing to make amends.

    Step 9: Making Direct Amends

Approach those harmed with a sincere apology and willingness to make things right. Amy shares her personal insights and guidance on crafting sincere amends letters. Learn about taking responsibility, expressing remorse, and seeking forgiveness. She provides a sample amends letter and real-life examples.Whether you’re on a journey to recovery or supporting someone through it, this episode offers valuable insights.

    Step 10: Continued Self-Reflection

Regularly assess actions and promptly admit mistakes. my shares personal insights on daily inventory, growth, and embracing mistakes without shame. She encourages listeners to apply these principles beyond addiction, adapting them to various life challenges.

    Step 11: Seeking Spiritual Connection

Deepen spiritual connection through prayer and meditation. Step 11 involves seeking to improve conscious contact with a higher power through prayer and meditation. Amy discusses the power of pausing when agitated, embracing humility, and becoming a channel of peace.

    Step 12: Helping Others

Share experiences and support others in their recovery journey. The final in our series “12 Steps For Anyone Who Wants Them” Amy delves into the final step of the 12-step program, offering guidance on spiritual awakening, supporting others in recovery, and applying principles in daily life! Don’t forget to go back and listen to steps 1 – 11 if you haven’t heard them yet.
