The Sobriety Podcast That Refuses to Lecture You: Meet Drunk-ish Host Stefanie Wilder-Taylor

There is a version of sobriety media that sounds like a TED Talk that forgot to end. Stefanie Wilder-Taylor built a show that does the opposite on purpose.

Drunk-ish is the sobriety podcast for people who, in her words, “don’t have it all figured out.” Wilder-Taylor is an author and comedian who describes her past self as a “former box-wine enthusiast,” which is either the most honest or the most poetic way anyone has described a Tuesday night in the last decade. She also hosts For Crying Out Loud, and she has been doing this long enough to know the difference between a sobriety story that lands and one that just performs.

Wilder-Taylor built a show that is honest, occasionally unhinged, and funny on purpose, because most long-term sober people know that humor isn’t the opposite of seriousness. It’s often the proof that you survived it.

“The goal of this podcast is to have fun conversations about sobriety without preaching,” Wilder-Taylor said at the top of the episode. “Just keep it real.”

This week, I sat down with her for the episode “The Sober Curator’s Sobriety Story.” We talked about the geographic cure, that move-to-a-new-city fantasy that anyone with a drinking problem has fallen for at least once. We talked about the exact moment I decided to project-manage my own rock bottom, scheduling my sobriety around summer break like it was a home renovation.

There’s also a story involving a bottle of wine, my then nine-year-old son, and a fistful of gumballs, which Wilder-Taylor rightly clocked as one of the saddest and funniest images I’ve ever handed a stranger with a microphone.

What I appreciated most about this conversation is that Wilder-Taylor doesn’t do the thing so many sobriety interviewers do, where they’re waiting for the redemptive line so they can wrap it in a bow. She lets the messy part stay messy. She laughs in the right places. She also, memorably, has some opinions about tiramisu that she probably should have kept to herself — and the way she drops them mid-conversation tells you everything about how she runs a show. You’ll understand when you hear it.

If you are 20 years sober like I am, or 20 days, or just sober-curious and tired of content that talks down to you, this is a show worth adding to your rotation. It’s the rare sobriety podcast that trusts its audience to be adults.
