This morning had every reason to spin me out. My train got canceled. So did my coworker’s. We both had meetings that couldn’t wait on a late arrival. So I told her, you get to the office. I’ll cover things remotely so someone’s logged on. I parked in the train lot, cracked open my laptop, got to work. Once she made it in, I grabbed the El. My only other option was paying for Center City parking. That was a hard no.
To get there from my place, you have to go down the way. Kensington and Allegheny. If you know Philly, you know. People nodded out. Half-conscious. The same streets I used to walk back when addiction ran my life.
But this time I was dancing. Earbuds in, Opalite absolutely blasting, grinning like the morning hadn’t thrown a single punch. Then the day decided to throw a few anyway. My rental got sideswiped. I got a ticket. Life was doing the absolute most.
And I kept dancing. I kept moving. I kept choosing peace even when the day wasn’t offering any. That is what recovery actually looks like. Not clean. Not perfect. Not effortless. Just steady. Rooted. Moving through the mess with a little grace. The streets that used to mean one thing mean something else now. The difference is not that the streets changed. I did.
This is the part of sober recovery nobody puts on a milestone chip. It isn’t only the day you quit drinking. It’s every ordinary morning after, when the world hands you a wrecked rental and a parking ticket and you decide to stay in your body and keep moving anyway. Sobriety is a lifestyle you practice on the hard days, not a finish line you cross once.
This morning reminded me how far I’ve come. What music can do. And what we are really building inside Swift Steps. We don’t numb. We anchor. We move. We heal, with music, with community, with truth that doesn’t need to be wrapped in a bow. Call it mindfulness, call it self-care, call it the sober movement finally making room for the messy middle. We just call it staying. A song becomes an anchor when the ground won’t hold still.
If you’ve never thought of music this way, it’s worth sitting with. The sober movement has plenty of tools now, recovery podcasts and sober retreats and whole alcohol-free lifestyle guides, and they all have their place. But a song meets you somewhere different. It doesn’t ask you to read or plan or show up at a certain time. It just plays, and your body remembers it knows how to move. For a lot of us building a sober lifestyle, that’s the difference between white-knuckling a hard morning and dancing through it.
That’s the whole idea behind Swift Steps. We use music as the anchor, community as the ground, and we make room for the messy middle of sober living that doesn’t fit on a milestone chip. If any of this sounds like your literal jam, there’s a seat here for you. Come sit with us. We’ll be right where you left us, dancing through it.
