A poem written to King Alcohol. In it, I remind myself that I am worthy of a sober life. Enjoy.
You held me in my brightest bloom,
a glint of sunlight in my veins,
but the storms came—torrents of chaos
carving paths I could not reclaim, and we lost ourselves—
To the recklessness of nights unremembered,
to the lure of your false promises,
and also? The ache of dependence,
the betrayal disguised as comfort.
I thought you were my solace,
a fire to keep me warm. Instead,
you consumed me, left me hollow.
You were no Apollo, no healer—
only a thief in the guise of a friend.
And I understand now,
with clarity that only distance can bring,
that your embrace was a mirage.
Over time, I have realized your silver tongue
and alluring call seem further and further away.
The illustrious beckon you once wielded
has no hold on me.
Before me now stands a verdant garden,
fraught with toil and sweat,
but so beautiful it causes me to weep,
and taste the tears of fulfillment.
When my hands trembled in the dark,
when the echoes of your whispers
lingered in my mind, I knew this:
we could not coexist.
I have planted new roots,
where your shadow cannot reach.
And though your memory clings,
I carry the fruit of this reckoning—
a life without you, a life reclaimed.
You turned me into someone I didn’t know.
You shattered my trust.
You whispered I wasn’t worth it.
But I am.
