Let’s get one thing straight right out of the gate: sober people do, in fact, go out.
I know — shocking. Unprecedented. Someone alert CNN.
But it’s true. We dance. We mingle. We stay up past 9 p.m. sometimes (but not too often because sleep hygiene is still a thing). And as someone who once thought nightlife required a drink in hand to be “fun,” I’m delighted to report that the landscape is changing — fast, creatively, and in every corner of the country.
According to a recent report on American nightlife behavior, the states that go out the most — the ones dropping hundreds of dollars each month on restaurants and live entertainment — aren’t necessarily the places you’d expect sober culture to thrive. But guess what? We’re showing up anyway. And not only are we showing up — we’re building something new.
The study by the fintech company SensaPay aimed to find where Americans spend more time and money dining out, attending live events, and enjoying nightlife. So grab your zero-proof spritz, your Dry January-but-make-it-all-year energy, and your willingness to be pleasantly surprised. We’re about to explore sober nightlife in the top 10 “going out” states in America.

🌟 THE DATA: AMERICA REALLY LOVES GOING OUT
Here’s what the report found:
- Rhode Island residents spend
$516/monthdining out — the most in the country - Hawaii spends the most on live entertainment —
$408/month - California leads with
68,000 restaurantsand3,370 bars - The Northeast? They’re out here winning the extracurricular Olympics
- And every state in the top 10 spends serious time at movies, live shows, and arts events
Which leads to the real question:
👉 Where does the sober community fit within this massive going-out culture?
The answer: Right in the middle of it — claiming space, creating alternatives, and redefining what nightlife can be without alcohol.

🍸 THE SHIFT: SOBER NIGHTLIFE IS HAVING A MOMENT
Sober bars, zero-proof bottle shops, NA tasting rooms, high-end mocktail menus — these aren’t fringe anymore. They’re stylish. They’re intentional. They’re Instagrammable. They’re everywhere. They’re staffed with mixologists who understand that complexity and creativity don’t require ABV, many of whom the Sans Bar Academy has trained.
Add in the “sober curious” movement, recovery-friendly events, and brands building entire communities around alcohol-free living, and you have…a sober nightlife renaissance. And for you Gen Xers and Millennials that still value your sleep – make sure to check out the Early Birds Clubs popping up around the country, an opportunity to dance the early evening away without the late-night drama, judgment, or creeps.
And it’s happening everywhere — even in states traditionally known for big bar scenes. Sober Curator Fun fact: NA Beer has even hit the SNL Zeitgeist.
