I stayed up way past my bedtime watching Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear on Hulu, and I regret nothing. Well, almost nothing. I regret that I’m now old enough to watch a documentary about music I lived through in real time. There’s a specific kind of Gen X whiplash that happens when the soundtrack of your twenties gets the prestige documentary treatment, and this one hit me square in the chest.

Here’s the thing nobody is saying out loud about this film: it’s a sobriety story. It’s just wearing a drum kit.

    The Setup

Louder Than Fear premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Festival in June and dropped on Hulu and Disney+ on August 13. Directors Justin Krook and Michael Dwyer had been filming Travis for over a decade, which explains why this doesn’t feel like a quick cash-grab celebrity doc. It feels lived in. You’re not watching a guy recap his life. You’re watching his life happen. The difference is palpable.

The broad strokes: kid from Fontana obsessed with drumming, collects trash in Laguna Beach to pay the bills, plays with The Aquabats, then steps in as the replacement drummer for Blink-182 and becomes the heartbeat of an entire generation of pop punk. The talking heads alone are a drummer’s hall of fame. Questlove. Stewart Copeland. Tommy Lee. Lars Ulrich. Plus Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Tim Armstrong, and a posthumous appearance from Taylor Hawkins that will absolutely wreck you.

And yes, Kourtney Kardashian is in it. Minimally. Mostly toward the end. Which makes complete sense when you remember the cameras started rolling long before she entered the picture, and I’ll admit I exhaled a little when I realized this was going to stay a Travis story and not drift into reality “keeping up” TV territory. It’s just that the man’s actual life doesn’t need borrowed drama.

The Part That Belongs on This Website

Long before the plane crash, Travis was terrified of flying. So terrified that a friend handed him a pill to take the edge off before a flight. If you know how this story goes, you know how this story goes. One or two pills before takeoff became needing them to function at all. His ex-wife Shanna Moakler says in the film that at his peak he was taking 20 to 30 pills a day. He had a security guard whose entire job was to watch him sleep and make sure he was still breathing.

Sit with that for a second. One of the most physically gifted drummers alive, paying someone to confirm he woke up.

Then came September 2008. A chartered Learjet leaving South Carolina crashed on takeoff. Four people died, including his assistant Chris “Lil Chris” Baker and his bodyguard Charles “Che” Still, men Travis considered brothers. He survived with burns over 65 percent of his body, broken ribs, a fractured back, and months in a burn center enduring more than two dozen surgeries. His friend and fellow survivor DJ AM made it out of the crash, then died of an accidental overdose a year later.

Travis has said it plainly: “my rehab was my plane crash.” No treatment center. No 30-day program. A literal trial by fire that most of us, thank God, will never experience. He got sober in a burn unit where the doctors couldn’t even dose his pain medication correctly because his tolerance was so high. Then he did the unglamorous work: trauma therapy, exercise, drumming, and staying done.

The film doesn’t flinch from the aftermath either. The survivor’s guilt. The suicidal thoughts. The years of asking why he was still here when everyone else wasn’t. This is the part of recovery stories that usually gets sanded down for mass consumption, and Louder Than Fear leaves the edges on.

    Thirteen Years on the Ground

I related to Travis’s fear of flying more than I expected to, and I’ve never been in a plane crash. He didn’t board a plane for 13 years. Thirteen. He drove and took boats across entire continents to keep touring. New dream: Travis contributes to our Sober Cruising guide or comes on TSC podcast and talks about all things Titanic. When he finally flew again in 2021, it wasn’t a cute comeback moment. It was a man white-knuckling his way back to a life his fear had shrunk.

I’ll be honest with you. I don’t know if I could do it. If I survived what he survived, I genuinely don’t know if I’d ever set foot on a plane again. Watching him choose to is the closest thing to a thesis statement this film has: the fear doesn’t go away, you just get louder than it.

    The Verdict

You don’t need to know a single Blink-182 song to enjoy this documentary. If you do know the songs, if you were there for the eyebrow ring era and the Warped Tour summers, bring tissues and maybe some ibuprofen for your aging Gen X joints.

What you’re really watching is a man who built an empire on rhythm, nearly lost everything including himself, got sober the hardest way imaginable, and then rebuilt a life bigger than the one addiction was quietly stealing from him. He’s a wildly talented musician and a genuinely savvy entrepreneur, but the throughline of this film isn’t talent or business. It’s survival, and what you do with it.

Sobriety doesn’t shrink your life. It expands it. Travis Barker is walking, drumming proof.

Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear is streaming now on Hulu and Disney+.

Where can I watch Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear?

The documentary is streaming now on Hulu and on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. It premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Festival in June before landing on streaming August 13, 2026.

    Is Travis Barker sober?

Yes. Travis got sober after surviving the 2008 plane crash and has stayed sober since. He has said his rehab was the crash itself, spending months in a burn center where he decided he was done with pills for good. Before the crash, he was taking 20 to 30 painkillers a day.

What happened in the 2008 plane crash?

A chartered Learjet carrying Travis and DJ AM crashed on takeoff in South Carolina in September 2008. Four people died, including Travis’s assistant Chris “Lil Chris” Baker and bodyguard Charles “Che” Still, plus the pilot and co-pilot. Travis suffered burns over 65 percent of his body and endured more than two dozen surgeries. DJ AM survived the crash but died of an accidental overdose a year later.

    How long is the documentary?

99 minutes. Perfect length for a one-sitting watch, even if that sitting starts way too close to your bedtime. Ask me how I know.

Who appears in Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear?

Travis anchors the film, with appearances from Blink-182 bandmates Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge, plus Questlove, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Tommy Lee, Lars Ulrich, Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, and a posthumous appearance from the late Taylor Hawkins. Kourtney Kardashian appears briefly toward the end.

Do I need to be a Blink-182 fan to enjoy it?

Not at all. The music is the backdrop, but the real story is survival, addiction, recovery, and rebuilding a life. If you’ve ever faced down a fear or gotten sober the hard way, this one will land.
