Why This Show Hits Different When You’re Clear-Headed
I’m coming up on eight years sober, and let me tell you something unexpected: my libido has never been stronger. Ditching alcohol in midlife didn’t just optimize my hormone balance and regulation; let’s just say it made me feel alive again in ways I’d forgotten were possible. And right now, that vitality is finding its outlet in the most delicious obsession: “Heated Rivalry”, the steamy hockey romance that’s currently lighting up my ahem…um, heart and proving to be the perfect capstone to 2025.
Here’s what I love about watching this show sober: every microexpression lands. Every lingering glance burns. Every deleted text message feels like a gut punch. The tension between elite athletes Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander builds without any hazy interference, and you feel everything. The series itself nods to this: alcohol appears in social scenes, but never as a crutch. These are professional hockey players who understand what booze does to performance, recovery, and vitality. They treat it as counterproductive, just like I do now.
And honestly? Sobriety amplifies pleasure in stories like this. When tension builds this exquisitely, you want to be fully present for every second.
The Canadian Underdog Story That Conquered North America
Rachel Reid was a largely unknown Harlequin Romance author. Her six-book “Game Changers” series had a devoted but modest following. Then, “Heated Rivalry” dropped as a Crave Canada production on November 28, 2025, HBO snagged the U.S. rights at the last minute, and suddenly the entire book series was sold out across North America.
The timing is almost comically perfect, Christmas gifting season, and Harlequin completely misjudged demand. There’s no six-book box set available. Fans (like me) are scrambling to Audible for the audiobooks because physical copies are backordered everywhere. I’m not sure I ever tried so hard to buy a series of books. In the end, it might be a better idea to have it read to you, if you know what I mean. What started as a small Canadian production has exploded into a global phenomenon, with new episodes dropping every Friday. Three episodes in, and we’re already at an 8.6 on IMDb.
This Is Not Netflix Background Noise
Here’s what makes “Heated Rivalry” special in an era of streaming slop: it demands your full attention.
As Slashfilm brilliantly notes, this show destroys the worst trend in American streaming that you were likely unaware was an actual strategy: that lazy, announce-everything style designed for people half-watching while scrolling on their phones. You know what I’m talking about: characters literally narrating their own actions because producers assume you’re not really watching.
“Heated Rivalry” refuses to do that. This adaptation thrives on nuance: gym tension conveyed through finger grazes, foot taps under tables during team dinners, reactions that linger just a beat too long. Microexpressions. Unspoken glances. Deleted texts that tell you everything about what someone is not saying.
It’s detailed, immersive storytelling that rewards active viewers. Who, by the way, like me, are watching the episodes over and over and over again. So who’s winning on the streaming strategy now? I’d say real storytelling. Oh, and if you really want to sink into it? Put on the official Spotify playlist during your rewatch. The mood immersion is chef’s kiss. Although the Vegas chair drag scene, not even Reddit can find that song – I dare you to get it out of your head.
Equal-Power Romance Between Rivals (Finally)
Three episodes in, and the fan craze is real. Queer fans are (mostly!) raving. Book lovers approve. And hetero women (myself included) are absolutely obsessed with something we rarely see: a romance between true equals.
Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) and Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) are both powerhouse hockey stars. Both captains. Both are at the top of their game. There’s no power imbalance, no rescue fantasy, no damsel. Just two rivals with simmering tension, massive chemistry, and a slow-burning love that builds depth for years before they finally call it love. I heard Rachel Reid in an interview explain that their love is built mostly through steamy scenes; there was no way to leave them out. Their relationship evolves as their physical exploration evolves – the only private time they spend together.
The actors were virtually unknown before this. Now they have massive followings, with fans calling them “absolute sweethearts” and fueling niche internet communities where this level of obsession feels completely normal because it is normal when the storytelling is this good.
Sober Curator Pro tip: Do yourself a favor and read the bonus chapter from Ilya’s perspective on the Las Vegas hookup scene at the end of Episode 2, Olympians. It reveals his backstage panic, the raw buildup, everything he’s not saying out loud. It’s essential reading.
The Actors Get It (And So Do We)
In this Variety interview, François Arnaud, who plays Scott Hunter, talks about crafting authentic sex scenes; intense, character-driven intimacy that mirrors the rivals-to-lovers arc. These aren’t gratuitous scenes. They’re emotional payoff. Every intimate moment is earned, and it shows.
Before you freak out watching Episode 3 “Hunter”, know that it is actually all of her first book “Game Changers”, which later is important to Shane & Ilya’s story – but in the moment seems out of the blue to pivot to this other couple. Still, you will love this additional love story too. This is what thoughtful storytelling looks like. This is what happens when creators respect their audience’s intelligence and emotional investment. BookTok seems to think that only a woman could have written this series, and only a gay director could have directed it so beautifully. It really does feel different, and my corner of the internet is obsessed.
Yes, I Made a Smoothie About It (I’m a Total Dork)
Listen, I’m so obsessed I’ve gone full dork. Episode 3 features a blueberry banana smoothie storyline between Kip and Scott Hunter’s characters that made me want to celebrate the show’s masculine-yet-tender energy in the most ridiculous way possible: I created a testosterone-boosting blueberry-banana smoothie inspired by their romance.
I’m not kidding. Blueberries for antioxidants and hormone support. Banana for natural energy and potassium. A scoop of protein. Some spinach for micronutrients. A handful of hempseeds, cacao nibs, and walnuts for healthy fats. I mean, it’s not as cute as the banana socks Kip gives Scott for his away games to ensure he has the smoothie boost of luck with him on the road. But it’s my way of honoring a show that celebrates vitality, strength, and vulnerability in equal measure.
Am I a dork? Absolutely. Do I care? Not even a little. You can check it out here.

The Unexpected Sweetness of Being Enthralled
Here’s something I didn’t expect: how rare and sweet it feels to be this captivated by a man-on-man romance portrayed with such depth, equality, and nuance.
In a romance TV landscape often saturated with superficial tropes and tired dynamics, “Heated Rivalry” feels like a breath of fresh air. Red, White & Royal Blue seemed edgy until this, I mean, it was good, but it did not have me thinking about it while trying to work, at yoga, and all night.
The powerful yet balanced relationship between Ilya and Shane is so authentic that it really has you thinking about the fact that there is literally only one openly gay AFL player, and no NHL players. This is a story about two people who are perfectly matched but find themselves in an environment where it is seemingly impossible to be their whole selves. A story many can relate to on some level, but in this situation, the stakes are so high. Let’s say hockey is getting a new fan base as we speak – here’s hoping it sparks more players to come out.
Vulnerability and strength coexist beautifully here. The storytelling is so thoughtful, so enthralling, that it creates an experience beyond typical romance clichés. It’s mesmerizing. It’s earned. It’s real.
The Buzz Is Real (And So Is This Community)
My Instagram feed is on fire right now. A new kind of energy is buzzing through me, too. Something I haven’t felt in a long time. Millions of people are obsessed with this show, and it’s creating a moment of genuine connection across fandoms, orientations, and demographics—a really heartfelt and optimistic way to end the year.
That’s the magic of great storytelling. It brings people together. It makes us feel less alone in our obsessions. It reminds us why we love stories in the first place.
