Two Stories in One Week, and the Conversation Underneath Both of Them

Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. Her cause of death has not been released. The Greenville Police Department has said its preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office says the cause and manner of death remain pending further testing. We are not going to speculate past that, and we would ask you not to either.

If this one is landing hard for you, that is a normal reaction and you are not being dramatic. 988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call or text, 24/7. SAMHSA’s National Helpline is 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential. And if a hotline isn’t your thing, text one sober person today. Just one. That counts.

We recorded this episode of The Sober Curator podcast at the end of July, and it was published on 08/19/26. Quit Lit Book Reviews: “Famesick,” “We Did OK Kid” + “This Is Me,” Rated by Sober Readers

Sunday night I was walking back into my parents’ house from my office, which is a she-shed in the backyard, and it was late. Ten thirty, eleven maybe. I had spent the whole afternoon on this week’s episode. Editing show notes. Building the article. Scheduling the social. All of that stuff does not happen by magic, no matter how much I wish there were a button.

I opened the door and Hayden Panettiere’s face was on the big screen TV and underneath it said Dead at 36.

And I said, out loud, to my mother, “What are you watching? That’s not right. What are you watching?”

I said it about four more times. What channel are you on. We just did our book review. That’s not possible. She’s only 36. She’s sober now. That’s not possible. That’s not possible.

The reason it landed like that is because on Wednesday, tomorrow, we publish our Quit Lit episode. We recorded it at the end of July. Three memoirs, and hers got the highest score of the three. Tamar gave it a 4.5. Amy Liz gave it a 4. They read it, I hadn’t, and I sat there for twenty minutes listening to two women I love talk about a book by a woman none of us had ever met, with real affection, because she had written the thing down honestly.

We were excited for her. She was talking publicly about her sobriety. She was getting back into acting. It read like a woman about to have a very good decade.

And then there was the other story

In the same seven days, completely separately, Brad Pitt told Esquire he is drinking again after seven years sober.

I was going to go live about it the day it hit. I had opinions ready. And then my Wi-Fi went out.

I have decided that was my higher power taking the router. Thanks, HP.

I am so glad we did not do it, because when I finally got online there was a wall of takes. Some I agreed with. Some I disagreed with. Some were interesting enough that I wanted more information before I formed an opinion, which I understand is not a popular position on the internet.

But it was a lot of judgment. And a lot of misinformation.

Tamar’s line on it is the one I keep coming back to: he did not call it a relapse, so neither should we. Not because we owe him anything. Because of the habit. The second we start assigning words to other people’s experience, we are doing the thing.

And I saw a version of that panic all over the sober internet. People at the seven and eight year mark posting that they were scared other people were going to start drinking now because Brad Pitt did.

Here is the reality, and Tamar said it better than I could. If you are going to pick up because a movie star did, you may need to go learn a little more about what substance use disorder actually is. For a lot of us this is life and death. I have been genetically tested. It is not a vibe.

Also, and I mean this warmly: it is none of our business. He is going to find out what is true for him the same way the rest of us did.

What these two stories actually have in common

Nothing, on paper. One is a death with no answers yet. One is a man giving an interview.

What they share is us. What we did with them.

We are a mental health media company. That is genuinely what we are, and we try to hold that line carefully. Our tagline is getting sober matters, staying sober matters more, and if you asked me who this place is for, it is people doing long-term sobriety with no days off. We also get people in their first month. We get sober curious. We get people who go in and out. There is a very big table here and everybody gets a chair, whatever label they brought with them. Addict, alcoholic, zero proof, alcohol free, clean. I do not care.

Because at the bottom of all of it, it is mental health. And that means we have to be careful.

Most weeks I want the glass half full with no vodka in it. I want to talk about cool sober business owners and trips and outfits and what we are binge watching and the new song by the sober musician. That is what we do here, most of the time, on purpose. I want the world to see that we are sober, not boring, and thriving, and that our lives get big and expansive.

And so do our problems. Because people in this community still die.

We lost a Sober Curator contributor in 2022. I never met him in person. We spent hours together on Clubhouse during the pandemic and he was a completely real person to me and it was a completely real loss.

So we do not get to only do the fun part.

The thing I actually want you to take from this

Somewhere in the middle of this recording Tamar told a story about listening to two women trash Alcoholics Anonymous on a podcast. Called it a cult. Described some genuinely bad experiences with members.

Tamar has fourteen years. She has seen people in the rooms who were not spiritually fit. She has also seen people who were not spiritually fit at work, at church, and at the grocery store. Early on somebody told her, before you go be judgy and start telling everyone it is predatory, go find your people. So she did. She found the women’s meetings. She found the accountants and the lawyers and the people who talked like her. It worked.

And her question about those two podcasters is the whole episode:

Somebody thirty days in is listening to you. They have been doing it alone. They are not sure what they are going to do next. Maybe tomorrow they were going to try a meeting. Then they hear you take the thing apart.

What if that was the one that would have saved their life?

This applies to every direction, by the way. I know plenty of twelve step people with strong opinions about everyone else. The recovery world has an enormous appetite for telling other people they are doing it wrong.

So here is my ask. If something worked for you, say so. Loudly. That is more useful than any takedown you will ever write.

    I fell off a ladder

Two days before we recorded this, I fell off a ladder hanging curtains. I am fine. That is not the story.

The story is I thought I was on the last step, and I wasn’t. I was higher up. And in a split second I was on the ground.

I did not see it coming. I misunderstood the information. I made the wrong decision.

One small move you did not think twice about, and a whole domino line goes over. Some of them you cannot pick back up.

That is the closest thing to an explanation I have for how anybody with real time behind them ends up back at the beginning. And it is the reason I am not interested in grading anyone.

Somebody said something in a meeting last week that I am going to steal for the rest of my life. It is not my original, and I want that on the record, but here it is: addiction could be defined as when you break your own heart repeatedly.

    The disco ball

One of my favorite objects is a disco ball, which is hundreds of pieces of broken glass. Put it together, hang it in the right room, point a light at it, and it is one of the most beautiful things you will ever see.

Broken world. Broken systems. Broken people. Nobody does any of this alone. You cannot advocate for yourself alone. You cannot even work out whether you need help alone.

So if you are feeling alone today, call a friend. Call 988. Call 1-800-662-4357. Our resource guides are always open and a lot of them are broken out state by state.

We do not care how you got here. We care that you are here.

So stop asking people to prove that their sobriety is the real kind because it came from a different room than yours. We are all just doing this. Some days suck.

You are allowed to find the program that actually works for you. You are allowed to try a lot of them until you have collected all the things that work. Twenty years in, I need more tools than I did at year five, not fewer, which sounds bleak if you are new and I promise you it is not.

If you want to keep this conversation going, this is exactly what we talk about at BACKSTAGE with The Sober Curator, our private culture club. It is the only thing on this site you pay for. Everything else stays free.

Hayden Panettiere, Brad Pitt + How We Talk About Recovery | The Sober Curator BONUS

Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19th, we publish the Quit Lit episode, recorded in July, with her book in it. We are running it as recorded.

So here is what I want to know. Who is the person you would call if today got heavy?

    Go call them anyway.

If you’re struggling, you are not alone and it is not too late. 988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call or text, 24/7. SAMHSA’s National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential. Help is Available

THE SOBER CURATOR RESOURCE GUIDE: At The Sober Curator, we provide high-quality content centered around the vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle of sobriety. While our focus is on the positive aspects of sober living, we also acknowledge that life can present challenges without the aid of alcohol or substances. Coping with these challenges alone can be daunting, which is why we strongly believe in finding recovery within a supportive community because it is the opposite of addiction.

If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol use disorder, substance use disorder, a co-occurring illness, or a behavioral health disorder, we urge you to seek help. While the task may seem daunting, it’s important to remember that support is readily available and that there are people out there who want to help.

It’s crucial to remain persistent in your search for assistance until you find the right solution for your unique situation. In some cases, it could be a matter of life or death, so it’s essential to never give up on finding the necessary help.

If your life or someone else’s is in imminent danger, please call 911. If you are in crisis and need immediate help, please call: 988.

    How did Hayden Panettiere die?

Her cause of death has not been released. She died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the age of 36, in Greenville, South Carolina. The Greenville Police Department said its preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has said an autopsy was performed and that the cause and manner of death remain pending further testing. Anything beyond that is speculation.

Was Hayden Panettiere sober when she died?

That is not publicly established and it should not be assumed in either direction. She spoke openly in 2026 about her history with alcohol and opioids, about postpartum depression, and about treatment, including in her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning and on On Purpose with Jay Shetty in May 2026. She never made her sobriety status at the time of her death a matter of public record, and neither the police nor the coroner’s office has addressed it.

    Did Brad Pitt relapse?

He did not use that word. In an Esquire interview published August 10, 2026, Pitt said he had been sober for seven years and had “got back off the wagon,” and described drinking now “in a more restrained manner.” He had previously attended AA following his 2016 divorce filing and publicly credited Bradley Cooper with helping him get sober at the National Board of Review gala in January 2020. Whether someone’s return to drinking is a relapse is theirs to define, not ours.

What does “taking inventory” mean in recovery?

Taking inventory is a twelve step term for an honest self-examination, from the fourth step. “Taking someone else’s inventory” is the community’s shorthand for the opposite: cataloguing another person’s flaws, choices, or program instead of your own. It is discouraged in the literature and it is extremely common in practice, particularly online, where grading other people’s recovery has become a content category.

Is it harmful to criticize a recovery program publicly?

It can be, and the risk falls on a specific person: someone very early in sobriety who has not committed to a path yet. Recovery pathways are not one-size-fits-all, and someone dismissing twelve step, or medication, or therapy, or a non-twelve-step program in a public forum may be talking a stranger out of the option that would have worked for them. The more useful move is to describe what worked for you and let people choose.

What should you say when a celebrity in recovery dies or starts drinking again?

As little as possible about their cause, their character, or their program, and as much as you want about your own experience. Report only confirmed facts, use the language the person used about themselves, do not diagnose from the outside, and include crisis resources. If you are in recovery and something worked for you, that is the part worth saying loudly.

Where can I get help right now?

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by call or text. SAMHSA’s National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is a free, confidential, 24/7 treatment referral and information service in English and Spanish. The Sober Curator maintains a national Alcohol + Substance Use Disorder Guide, a Recovery Nonprofit Resource Guide and an LGBTQ+ Recovery Resource Guide, much of it broken out state by state.

Great episode. Thanks for covering Hayden’s death. Really devastating loss. My daughter and I have watched Nashville all the way through 2 or 3 times.
Honoring all pathways to recovery is so vital. What worked for me (Narcotics Anonymous, 12 Step fellowships) is not always the right fit for someone else. My favorite example of this is a person I interviewed whose recovery program included therapy and ballroom dancing. The Century Ballroom community was their fellowship and it really worked for them. in addition to the other supports they did.

      Thank you,
      Heather V 5/5/94
