25 Reasons Not to Miss the 2025 A.A. International Convention in July…Even if You’re Not in A.A.

Whether you’re in recovery, a recovery advocate, or someone just curious about how Alcoholics Anonymous has changed lives around the globe, the 2025 A.A. International Convention in Vancouver is where you want to be. This isn’t your average conference; it’s a celebration of hope, resilience, and the incredible power of community. It’s funny, uplifting, and downright inspiring—and no, you don’t need to be part of a 12-step program to experience the magic. Whether you’re there to deepen your understanding of substance use disorders, support a loved one, or just vibe with thousands of people focused on positivity and transformation, there’s a reason (or 25) for you to pack your bags and join the fun!

1. Celebrate Sobriety in Style

What better way to mark your journey than at A.A.’s 90th anniversary? It’s like a birthday party for recovery, and the whole world is invited. Not in recovery? Think of it as the most uplifting festival of resilience you’ll ever attend. 🎉

2. Be a Part of History

This isn’t just another meeting—it’s a monumental milestone! You’ll be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of people who’ve rewritten their life stories. If you’re not in recovery, it’s a rare chance to witness history in the making and gain insight into a global movement.

3. The Joy of the Big Meetings

Big. Like, BC Place Stadium big. Picture thousands of sober souls coming together for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday gatherings—your goosebumps will have goosebumps. Not in recovery? The sheer energy in the stadium is a life lesson in unity you don’t want to miss.

4. Soak in the Theme: ‘Language of the Heart’

This year’s theme is all about the universal language we share in recovery. It’s a reminder that whether you’re from Tokyo or Topeka, your story matters. Advocates take note: this is where recovery meets inclusivity, and everyone is invited to speak the same language of hope.

5. Kick it Off with a Sober Block Party

Who doesn’t love a block party? On Thursday, July 3, the fun starts with a celebration that’ll have you smiling from ear to ear—no hangovers included. If you’re curious about recovery, this is a welcoming space to learn, laugh, and make new friends. 🎶

6. You Can Be Convention “Unplugged”

What if crowds make you nervous? Or you can’t sit for long periods? Or maybe you’re an introvert, a caregiver, or a person who just needs downtime to rest and recharge? They’ve got you. No one’s handing out detention slips if you don’t attend everything. The whole point of recovery is learning to take care of yourself so you can thrive. Need to dip out? No worries! Pop in and out as you need to—it’s all customizable.

7. Hear Jaw-Dropping Stories

The speakers at this event have been to hell and back, and their stories will leave you inspired, uplifted, and maybe a little teary-eyed (in the best way). For recovery advocates, this is a treasure trove of real-life education on the resilience of the human spirit.

8. Diversity is the Name of the Game

A.A. is global, baby! You’ll meet folks from every walk of life, speaking every language and proving recovery knows no boundaries. For advocates, this is a crash course in understanding addiction’s universal impact and solutions.

9. Get Your Volunteer Game Face On

Want to give back? The convention offers plenty of ways to roll up your sleeves and be of service. Advocates, this is your chance to actively support a life-changing movement while learning hands-on about the recovery process. 💪

10. Attention Check…

Bueller? Bueller? OK. Guess who will be there? Yes, that’s right—I’m hiding this little piece of information right in the middle of this listicle to see if you’re paying attention: The Founder and THE Sober Curator herself, Alysse Bryson, will be there. (And though less exciting but also worthy of note, a bunch of us Sober Curator Contributors will be there, too.) But here’s a secret hot tip for catching an Alysse Bryson sighting or even a possible meet-and-greet opportunity: Alysse has never met a gift shop she didn’t like. So… I’m not saying you’ll find her in any particular merch area, but merch and swag would be a good place to stay alert if you’re hoping to meet her. (If you follow her, you’ll know she’s been on a recent “no spend” challenge, so she may just be browsing.) Nonetheless, pretend like you’re playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? and keep your eyes peeled for Alysse and The Sober Curator posse. Plus, hey—whether you’re into hats, shirts, or mugs, you’ll find something to commemorate this epic event. (Advocates, these keepsakes are great for starting conversations about recovery and spreading awareness!)

11. Rollin’ with the Al-Anon Homies

Al-Anon Family Groups will host events, too, so bring your loved ones along for the ride. After all, recovery isn’t a solo sport. For supporters, Al-Anon sessions offer powerful insights into the role family plays in healing.

12. Discover New Recovery Tools

Workshops and panels will introduce you to ideas and techniques you’ve never considered. Who knows? That “aha!” moment might be waiting for you. Advocates, this is an incredible opportunity to add to your toolkit for supporting others.

13. Accessibility for All

From language interpretation to accommodations for disabilities, this convention is committed to making sure everyone can fully participate. No one gets left behind. Advocates, this inclusivity is a great model for how recovery spaces should be.

14. Explore Beautiful Vancouver

This city is a gem with breathtaking views, fabulous food, and plenty of places to unwind. Recovery and relaxation? Sign us up. Advocates, take time to explore this vibrant setting that symbolizes growth and renewal.

15. Bring the Family

Kids, partners, and friends—everyone’s welcome to soak in the good vibes. The more, the merrier! Not in recovery? No problem. Share this experience with loved ones to foster understanding and togetherness.

16. Break Out the Responsibility Statement

This timeless mantra—born at the 1965 Toronto Convention—is the heartbeat of A.A. It’s a great reminder that you’re part of something much bigger than yourself. Advocates, this is your call to action to support those still suffering.

17. Get Reacquainted with Old Friends and/or Meet New Ones

Conventions are like giant family reunions but without the awkward small talk. Every person feels a bit uncomfortable in a new setting. But change your mindset, and you never know who you’ll bump into or who you’ll meet! Advocates, network with fellow supporters and build lifelong connections.

18. Learn from the OGs

Seasoned members will be dropping wisdom bombs left and right. Prepare to have your mind blown (in a recovery way, of course). For those outside the program, it’s a unique chance to hear wisdom that transcends addiction.

19. Feel All the Feels

When thousands of people stand up and recite the Serenity Prayer together? It’ll give you the Ed Sheeran-sized Shivers. Advocates, this moment will affirm why recovery is worth every effort. Regardless of why you came, you’ll leave with your soul on fire.

20. Rules? UGH.

Sure, there are some standard rules about what you can bring into BC Place—some minor inconveniences for sure. Tell you what, though: it’s a small price to pay for an experience of a lifetime. Advocates, these safety measures ensure an event that’s secure and welcoming for all.

21. Recharge Your Recovery Batteries

Whether you’ve got decades of sobriety or you’re a newbie, this event will reignite your passion for recovery. Advocates, it’s a reminder of the immense power of community to heal lives.

22. If You’re a Person Who “Doesn’t Travel Well”…Relax

Need a visa or travel insurance? Need a place to stay? The FAQs have you covered, so you can focus on the fun stuff instead of the logistics. (links below!) You’re NEVER alone as a part of an A.A. event.

23. Feel the Unity

There’s something powerful about seeing people from every corner of the planet united in a common purpose. It’s the ultimate “We’re not alone” moment. Advocates will find this unity a profound testament to the strength of collective healing.

24. Reconnect with Your Why

Being surrounded by so much strength and hope is a great way to remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place. Advocates, it’s an inspiring way to recharge your commitment to supporting recovery.

25. Leave with More than Memories

You’ll leave the convention with a renewed sense of purpose, a heart full of gratitude, and maybe even a new friend or two. Advocates will find it’s a transformative experience equipping them to better champion recovery efforts.

Important Pro Tip:

Heads Up!

Canada has strict policies regarding prior DUI convictions. Lots of factors come into play: in which state were you arrested? How long has it been? Was it deferred prosecution or an actual conviction? Believe it or not, even an old DUI from 1992 might still prevent you from entering Canada. Don’t guess—consult a lawyer now (before registering) to avoid travel headaches later. Advocates, share this tip with anyone planning to attend!

A Celebration for Everyone Sober and/or Supports Recovery

Whether you’re in recovery, a recovery advocate, or just someone who wants to learn more about addiction and healing, the 2025 A.A. International Convention is an experience like no other. Come for the stories, stay for the connections, and leave with a heart full of hope and a suitcase packed with inspiration. Like the members of the Gap Band, let’s all get on this Party Train!
