Your quit lit story is a big deal. It’s raw, it’s real and it’s yours. But unless you’re Beyoncé — or someone with an online following as massive as hers — the traditional publishing route might smudge your voice, leaving you clutching the scraps of the artist formerly known as your creative control. If you’re the kind of creative who values owning your work and keeping it true to your vision (think Taylor Swift re-recording her albums to regain control of her music), self-publishing might be your best bet.
Here’s what I’ve learned in my master’s program about current trends in traditional and indie publishing — and why even seasoned, traditionally published authors are choosing to self-publish:
1. Your Voice Is Sacred… Just Not to Them
Traditional publishers might say they will preserve your voice, but they often dilute the sound and tone. (It’s usually hidden in fancy contract legalese.) Imagine pouring your heart into your story, only to have it read like a stranger wrote it. Self-publishing lets you keep full creative control. If your artistry matters, traditional publishing can feel like being a painter handcuffed to a chair — staring at a blank canvas.
2. Queries, Rejections and Expenses, Oh My!
Traditional publishing is a fortress guarded by high rejection rates. Crafting a compelling query letter is an art form requiring precision, creativity, up-to-the-minute trends and salesmanship. Hiring someone to write that fabulous query? Add it to the list of expenses the publisher won’t reimburse. That’s all on you.
3. Agents… and We’re Not Talking 007
Agents are flooded with pitches, making standing out almost as hard as scoring a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory. Even if you land an agent, there’s no guarantee they’ll secure a deal for your book. Plus, agents are expensive — and that’s just to pitch your book. Don’t forget the lawyer you’ll need to review your contracts (more on that later!). Self-publishing skips these gatekeepers and lets you decide when and how your story gets told.
4. Direct Sales = Direct Deposits
Yes, Amazon takes a big cut of your book sales. So do traditional publishers — plus, they cost you something arguably more valuable: control. Explore direct sales platforms like IngramSpark, Lulu, or PrintNinja. Add a Shopify account, Etsy shop, or website to sell directly to readers. Throw in signed copies or fun extras like bookmarks, and build a loyal audience — on your terms.
5. Unless You’re Oprah or Obama…
Traditional publishers focus on big names, leaving new authors fighting for scraps of attention. Self-publishing levels the playing field, giving you control over your brand and audience. You don’t need to be famous to make an impact — and you don’t need an endorsement from anyone to get you in the door.
6. The NYT Best Seller List Is Suspect
“The New York Times” Best Seller list, once a gold standard, has faced criticism for opaque selection processes and manipulation via bulk purchases. Why chase an outdated, shady benchmark when you can focus on meaningful metrics like reader engagement, long-term sales or my personal favorite: the fulfillment of helping others?
7. Freedom Over Timelines
Traditional publishers control your book’s release schedule. Want it out during your birthday month or to honor your dad’s memory in January? Good luck. Self-publishing lets you align your release with your own calendar and personal milestones.
8. Contracts: Lawyer Up!
Signing a book contract without legal help is like buying a used car in the ’80s without checking under the hood. Traditional publishers often include clauses that restrict your future work. Here’s a tough pill to swallow: You’ll need to spend a decent amount of money on a lawyer who can help you read through your contract with an eagle eye. You’ll definitely want to protect your intellectual property, and there is no going back easily once that bell has been rung.
9. They’re Just a Logo
Who’s brand-loyal when it comes to books? Have you ever heard a reader say, “I only read books published by Hachette.” Me either. Self-publishing lets you create a personal brand that resonates with readers, without being tied to a corporate logo. Better yet, create your own imprint.

10. Your Advance = Marketing Budget
The advance you get from a traditional book deal is not for a vacation in Tahiti. By the time you reimburse yourself for the query letter author, the agent fees and the lawyer it took to get you that book deal, it’s a hard truth when you realize that “advance” was really a prepayment for the marketing you’ll need to do once your contract ends. It’s an even harder truth to realize you don’t actually like the book you’re now stuck with marketing, because you had to relinquish creative control.
11. Editors in Traditional Publishing
If you do happen to get an editor as part of your book deal with a traditional publisher, remember they work for the publisher — not you. Self-publishing lets you hire a unicorn editor (more on that below!) who will both guide you and protect your voice and vision.
12. Choices, Baby
From glossy finishes to recycled paper, self-publishing puts you in charge of every detail: color or black and white, fonts, back matter, author bio, hardcover or paperback — the decisions are yours. Don’t want to DIY? Hire it out! Indie publishing ensures your book reflects your artistic vision and personal style.
13. Keep Your Rights
Traditional publishers often demand authors sign away their rights, limiting future opportunities. Self-publishing ensures you retain full ownership — for spin-offs, adaptations, translations, the whole nine yards.
14. Trash the Trends and Find your Fans
Traditional publishers chase trends, leaving your agent’s hands tied if your book isn’t “in” right now. Self-publishing lets you tell your story your way while building lasting connections with readers. Own your email list and your readership! Whether it’s sending holiday Starbucks cards, running a poll for fan FAQs or chatting on Instagram Live, you can make readers feel part of your journey — or skip all that and do it your way. It’s your call!
15. Marketing on Your Terms
Maybe your book is just to supplement another business you own, so you have a specific marketing plan. Do you think a traditional publisher cares about that? (Hint: NO.) Self-publishing balances craft and commerce without forcing you to sell your soul to suit the preferences of a trad publisher.
16. One Size Fits…None.
Traditional publishers often impose a cookie-cutter approach. Self-publishing gives you the entire bakery. Maybe your story has a focus on hiking, so you want to design some swag specific to that hobby. Enter backpacks, bandanas and water bottles or other hiking merch with your logo. Maybe your roommate in treatment was a circus clown, and after getting sober, you decided to join the circus too! You could give out red clown noses or put your branding on giant clown shoes. Good luck trying to find a traditional publisher who will sign off on your branding ideas.
17. Skip the Stereotypes
Self-publishing prevents you from being pigeonholed into a specific genre. It frees you to experiment and explore narratives that defy conventions. Imagine if Sandra Bullock had been stuck in rom-coms after “Miss Congeniality.” No “The Blind Side.” No “Bird Box.” Tragic.
18. You Build the Dream Team
Ever worked with somebody you don’t like? Yeah, me too. In traditional publishing, you don’t get to choose who you are assigned to. Self-publishing allows you to build your team (and your budget) from the ground up.
19. Unicorn Editors
Great editors are rare and hard to find. Self-publishing lets you hire someone who truly understands your story, and the personal nature of writing quit lit. Part guide, part therapist and part editor — by the time you hit the “publish” button, you’ll be very close friends.
20. Keep the Fun, Drop the Stress
Traditional publishing is a long, competitive and draining process. Self-publishing streamlines the process, so you can focus on the joy of creating. If it’s not fun at some level, it might be time to ask yourself why you are doing it?
21. Be a Disruptor
Self-publishing is reshaping the literary world, just like indie music disrupted the recording industry. By going indie, you join a movement that values and preserves creativity and authenticity.
22. Friends Don’t Let Friends Suffer from Voice Removal
Traditional publishers can nitpick manuscripts to death — especially if you write with your voiceprint. Keeping your talkthenticity intact in traditional publishing is not really a thing. Would you want some rando removing your voice from your personal work? Me either. Indie publishing keeps your story (and your voice) true.
23. It’s Not Personal, It’s Business
Publishing is a business, not a nonprofit looking to hand out big checks for heartfelt stories. Self-publishing lets you protect your artistic integrity, even if it means trading prestige for authenticity. You need to decide which is more valuable to you.
24. Social Media ≠ Success
Publishers expect a solid social following before they’ll consider your book. But what if social media isn’t your jam? Maybe your strengths lie in in-person events, craft fairs, or making personal connections with educators? Maybe you want to drop into a local bookstore and gift the owner a case of your books to sell. Self-publishing gives you the flexibility to play to your strengths.
25. Like Burger King, Have It Your Way
As an indie author, you’ll have the freedom to tell your story your way. In a world where independence is power, self-publishing is an expression of self-love and a choice to preserve and illuminate your journey. Because…you rule. (Yeah. I just did that.)
The constellation of your story is unique and should be treated as such. If you crave full creative control, self-publishing is your leap of faith calling from the universe. Take a deep breath, trust the process and unabashedly unleash your story.
