“The Good House” Shines with Sigourney Weaver’s Nuanced Performance in Thought-Provoking Drama

“The Good House” is a drama film directed by Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky. It is based on Ann Leary’s novel of the same name. The movie stars Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Kline, and Morena Baccarin in the lead roles. The film tells the story of Hildy Good (Sigourney Weaver), a real estate agent in a small town in New England who struggles to maintain her sobriety while dealing with the challenges of her personal and professional life.

Sigourney Weaver delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Hildy Good, a once-successful real estate agent struggling with alcoholism and a failing business. The character is complex and multidimensional, and Weaver does an excellent job of bringing her to life on screen. She portrays the character’s vulnerability and inner turmoil with sensitivity and grace while capturing her wit and strength.

Kevin Kline plays Hildy’s ex-husband, Frank Getchell, a successful real estate agent. Kline’s performance is equally strong, bringing depth and complexity to his character, which adds to the film’s overall impact.

Morena Baccarin plays Rebecca McAllister, a woman who moves to town and hires Hildy to sell her house. Baccarin’s performance is excellent, and she conveys a sense of mystery and intrigue that keeps the audience engaged throughout the film.

The film’s pacing is deliberate and measured, focusing on character development and introspection. This is not a fast-paced action movie or a slapstick comedy but rather a thoughtful and emotional drama that explores the complexities of human relationships and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life.

My name is Hildy, and I’m an alcoholic.

One of the strengths of “The Good House” is its ability to convey the beauty and complexity of small-town life. The film’s setting, a quaint New England town, is rendered in exquisite detail, with stunning cinematography that captures the region’s changing seasons and natural beauty.

Overall, “The Good House” is a powerful and moving drama showcasing its outstanding cast’s talents. The film’s themes of addiction, regret, and redemption are handled with sensitivity and grace, and the result is a deeply affecting and thought-provoking movie that will resonate with audiences long after the credits roll. If you are a fan of character-driven dramas with a strong emotional core, “The Good House” is worth checking out.

The Sobees Movie Night Score: 3 out of 5

Has Sigourney Weaver portrayed an alcoholic in other films? The answer is yes.

Yes, Sigourney Weaver has been in other films about addiction. One of her most notable roles in this genre is in the 1988 film “Gorillas in the Mist,” in which she played real-life conservationist Dian Fossey, who struggled with alcoholism. Weaver’s portrayal of Fossey earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

She also played a recovering alcoholic in the 1992 film “1492: Conquest of Paradise,” in which she portrayed Queen Isabella of Spain, and her struggle with addiction was a significant plot point in the movie.

In addition to these films, Weaver has appeared in many other movies that explore addiction and recovery, including “Half Moon Street,” “Death and the Maiden,” and “A Map of the World.”
