You know that book living rent-free in your head? The essay drafts collecting digital dust in your Google Docs? The newsletter you keep meaning to start?
Tawny Lara knows about them too. And starting September 22, she’s coming for your excuses.
The author of Dry Humping: A Guide to Dating, Relating, and Hooking Up Without the Booze and co-author of The Sobriety Deck is hosting live virtual writing sessions every Tuesday and Thursday through November 19. One hour on Zoom, 12 to 1 PM Eastern (that’s 9 AM for us Pacific people, which pairs nicely with a second cup of coffee).
Here’s how each session breaks down: twenty minutes of guided prompts and warm-up sprints so you never stare down a blank page alone, thirty minutes of focused writing time, and ten minutes of community talk with other writers who also know the specific chaos of this creative life. There’s a private group chat to keep momentum going between sessions, and a camera-off, mic-muted option if you’d rather just show up and write.
If you’ve spent any time in recovery spaces, you already know why this works. Accountability plus community plus a standing appointment beats waiting for inspiration every single time. It’s the same reason Thursday night meetings still fill up after decades. You show up, you do the thing, and somewhere along the way the thing gets easier.
Tawny writes about mental health, the non-alcoholic drink movement, and media through a pop culture lens on her Substack, Beyond Liquid Courage. Her past writing room participants describe those two hours as the most productive of their week, and several credit her coaching with getting their projects out of their heads and onto the page.
The full series runs $550, and Tawny says she’s happy to chat about shorter options at a smaller investment if nine weeks feels like a big commitment. Spots are limited because she wants a writer’s room, not a webinar with 400 muted rectangles.
Fall is for cozy sweaters, decent NA cider, and finally writing the thing. Go sign up.
