Fun and Easy Ways to Stay Cool at Home This Summer

Summer can be a real test, especially when you’re trying to stay cool without reaching for a drink. But hey, there’s no need to sweat it! We’ve got some great tips to keep you chilled out right from the comfort of your own home. Think DIY mocktail, a refreshing dip in the pool, or even just kicking back with a good book in the shade. Here’s how to make this summer a blast—without the booze!

Beat the Heat with Cool Eats

Summer is the perfect time to switch up your eating habits with lighter, cooler meals. Instead of hot dishes, go for salads, cold pasta salads, and chilled soups like gazpacho. These meals are refreshing and often quicker to prepare, so you spend fewer hours in the hot kitchen. Also, incorporating plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet can be especially beneficial, as a study from the International Journal of Epidemiology found that consuming fresh produce can improve overall well-being (including mental health). As you may already know, maintaining a balanced and stable mindset during recovery matters so much because when you nourish the body and mind with fresh produce, you basically enhance your overall health and resilience, which, in turn, aids in the journey toward long-term sobriety and emotional stability.

Refreshing Beverages

One of the joys of summer is sipping on cold, refreshing drinks. For someone in sobriety, there are countless non-alcoholic options that are both delicious and cooling. Try making a watermelon slushie by blending frozen watermelon chunks with a splash of lime juice. Also, consider classics like iced herbal teas, sparkling water with a twist of lemon, or homemade lemonade with fresh mint for an extra refreshing kick. At the end of the day, the encouraging part is that so many non-alcoholic options taste amazing, so create a list of your favorites to enjoy each day, and perhaps create a list of brand-new options you have yet to try.

Keep Your Space Cool

While food and drinks are a great way to enjoy the summer, let’s not forget one of the best feelings ever: stepping into a perfectly chilled space after a scorching summer stroll. It’s like a breath of fresh air for your soul! To achieve this, one needs a well-maintained AC unit that cools your home efficiently. According to the United States Department of Energy, servicing your AC can improve its efficiency by 5% to 15%, so don’t skip this part this summer. And for those in sobriety, maintaining a cool environment can be extra helpful as it can also reduce stress and help you relax. The good news is, sometimes, a simple filter change can make a world of difference, but there are times when a professional might need to take a closer look. Either way, it’s worth the investment for your comfort and peace of mind.

Cool Down with Fun Activities

It goes without saying that a swim is one of the best ways to beat the heat. Be it in a pool, the ocean, or a nearby lake, it always works wonders. Just make sure you’re careful and have plenty of sunscreen on.  If you prefer other activities, however, like walking, jogging, or biking, keep in mind that early mornings or late evenings are a safer time to do those, particularly for those susceptible to heat stress. Also, summer is the ideal time to finally check off those bucket list items you’ve been itching to try, like bungee jumping or skydiving. It’s a way to add some excitement to your life and celebrate the start of your new journey with a bang.

Relax and Unwind

And don’t forget the little things that make a big difference, like taking regular breaks to relax and unwind. Read a book in the shade or watch your favorite movie in a cool room. Listening to calming music while lying down with a cool cloth on your forehead can work wonders.

Remember, staying cool isn’t just about the physical aspect; keeping your mind relaxed and stress-free is equally important.
