Recovery on the Runway: The Break Free Foundation Returns for Their Fifth New York Fashion Week Runway Show

In the bustling heart of New York City, a fashion revolution is underway. During New York Fashion Week, an unconventional runway event is set to take center stage. Break Free Designer Showcase is not just another show; it’s a powerful statement, an immersive experience that merges art, design, and fashion with social awareness.

Scheduled for Monday, February 12th, at 6 pm, the Break Free Designer Showcase breaks away from the traditional fashion norms by featuring mental health and recovery rights activists as models and designers. These activists, through their unique designs, are set to illuminate the pressing issues of mental health, substance use, and co-occurring disorders within the fashion industry and beyond.

The proceeds from this showcase will significantly support the Break Free Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing scholarships to those seeking treatment for substance use disorders. The foundation firmly believes that financial constraints should not prevent anyone from accessing necessary recovery treatment.

Alexandra Nyman, the founder of the Break Free Foundation, expresses the importance of the fashion industry in shaping societal norms. “It is an understatement to say that the fashion industry impacts how we as a society choose to present ourselves to the world,” she states. “We continue to raise our voices during New York Fashion Week in an effort to raise awareness about mental health and substance use disorders in the fashion industry and beyond.

This season’s lineup includes notable designers such as Big Man Culture, Dmarxx Design, Mebylee, Tyrone Chablis of Chablis Designs, and LadyCat. Particularly exciting is the return of Tyrone Chablis, who has swiftly established himself as a standout designer at Break Free. His previous collection, inspired by Beyonce’s Renaissance, drew a standing ovation.

Adding further depth to the event, Break Free is partnering with The Sober Curator, an online sober lifestyle magazine, to bring exclusive interviews with each of the designers. In collaboration with Beyond Art Space, there will also be a pop-up art gallery during the mocktail hour and the afterparty.

Break Free NYFW is more than just a fashion show; it’s a testament to the power of resilience and recovery. It promises to be an immersive, thought-provoking, and inspirational runway experience that should not be missed. Join us in breaking the mold and promoting awareness of mental health and substance use disorders within the fashion industry.
