The Sober Curator

Pop-Up Art School with Catherine Just: Cyanotypes

Catherine Just is an award-winning artist, photographer, mentor, and intuitive healer living in Los Angeles. Her work has been published on the cover of National Geographic, inside O magazine, and is shown in galleries internationally.

She considers her art process a sacred practice of listening to energy and light. She investigates what lives between the words and underneath the surface of relationships, inside intimacy, and the spiritual and energetic substance that’s felt but not seen visually.

Catherine got sober from a meth addiction at 18 years old and has 35 years of continuous sobriety. She apprenticed with Miguel Ruiz who wrote the Four Agreements, is certified in the McDonald Manifestation Method of EFT tapping and is becoming certified in the Trauma of Money Method and Mindset and Abundance coaching. She uses large format film cameras, alternative photography processes, painting, printmaking, sewing, drawing and writing in her conceptual artwork.

Catherine mentors artists, entrepreneurs, and people in recovery. She offers boudoir/embodiment photo sessions in Los Angeles and Paris, sells her fine art online and through White Wall Art Projects Gallery in Australia, teaches online courses, and offers intuitive healing sessions. She is the proud single mama to her son Max, who has Down syndrome. She’s currently working on a project about her son Max, ableism, stereotypes, and the value and worth inherent inside all of us.

JOIN CATHERINE JUST @ POP-UP ART SCHOOL: CYANOTYPES

WHEN: Friday, March 3rd, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

WHERE: Wherever you want! The class will be hosted on Zoom

PRICE: Pick Your Price! Catherine offers a 3-tiered price structure

$47.00 // $77.00 // $97.00

This class is for newcomers to the cyanotype process or those who want to get back into it or learn how Catherine makes hers.

She’ll share the different materials and how she uses them and go through the process of making them during the live zoom session. You can ask questions and get inspired to make your own. Catherine added mixed media to some of hers, and she’ll share all about that on another pop-up. You don’t need any materials – this is to learn and watch the process so you can do it independently. You’ll receive the video replay to watch as a resource while creating your Cyanotypes. (When you sign up, you’ll receive a list of supplies if you buy them, but they aren’t needed to attend this class.)

Online art classes were not just something we did to fill up our time during the pandemic. Although, admittedly, that’s when I started taking any type of online art course and I took several. The list included: vision boards, sketching, watercolor, graphic design, diamond painting, and collage. Missing from that list? Photography. Until now.

Just this past weekend I took Catherine’s Pop-Up Art School Session 1: iPhone Apps & How to Use Them, thanks to fellow Sober Curator Kate Vitela telling me she was signed up for the class. It was a happy surprise to also see Sober Curator and Founder of The Creative Sober Missing Mei also on the Zoom.

Over 90 minutes, Catherine showed us tips and tricks for using five iPhone cameras and photo editing apps. Although the class has passed, you can still sign up and watch the how-to video here for a small fee here. I am very much a visual and hands-on learner, and this was precisely the type of class that worked for me. I’m pretty pleased with the new photo editing skills I’ve learned, and I’m excited to spend more time creating.

CURATED CRAFTS: You got sober; what will you do to keep your hands busy?

Art therapy is a technique rooted in the idea that creative expression can foster healing and mental well-being. You may be the next Sober Picasso, or you may be the next big Pinterest Fail. Either way, you’re creatively creating something with your hands and expanding your mind. That’s a great way to relieve stress and express your feelings.

Are you addicted to pinning? Make sure to follow along with us on Pinterest. Crafting is not your jam, but you may love to read. Head to our #QUITLIT section and see what we’ve been reading.
