Nutrigenomics_ The Future of Biohacking Starts with Your DNA Lane Kennedy

As a DNA Functional Nutritionist and practitioner, I couldn’t be more thrilled to start seeing this terminology in the news: nutrigenomics! This is not just a buzzword — it’s the key to unlocking your body’s full potential by understanding and optimizing your unique genetic blueprint. (It’s also my love language!)

If you’ve ever felt like the one-size-fits-all advice about diet and health just doesn’t work for you, there’s a reason for that. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all; remember this is an Nof1 society, baby! Your genes are as unique as your fingerprint, and they hold the answer to how your body processes nutrients, manages energy, what substances you fancy (or fancied), how you wake up — and even how you respond to exercise. Let’s dive into why nutrigenomics is a game-changer for optimizing your health in recovery and how I’m helping people in my practice take control of their genetic destiny. (Perhaps you watched one of my webinars on DNA; if you haven’t, you can watch a replay here).

    What is Nutrigenomics?

At its core, nutrigenomics is the science of how your diet interacts with your genes. Think of it as the ultimate personalized nutrition plan — one that’s written in your DNA. If you’re looking for a practical way to implement personalized nutrition, a personalized meal planning app can help. Nutrigenomics takes this concept further by aligning your meals with your genetic predispositions to maximize nutrient absorption, metabolic efficiency, and overall health.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Gene Expression: Every bite you take has the power to turn specific genes on or off. For example, eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli can activate detoxification pathways in your liver!
    • Tailored Nutrient Timing: Knowing when and how to eat specific nutrients can optimize energy levels, brain function, and even hormonal balance.
    • Disease Prevention: By understanding your genetic risks, you can proactively design meals that counteract potential health issues like heart disease or diabetes.

In short, nutrigenomics is like having a cheat sheet for your body — a way to work smarter, not harder!

Why Understanding Your Genes Is Critical in 2025

We live in an era where technology allows us to peek behind the curtain of our biology — which is so cool — but how you interpret that information can be complex. Genetic testing has gone from being something reserved for labs and researchers to a practical tool for anyone looking to optimize their health. But wait; before you go and buy some $500+ report, STOP. Hear me out. That report won’t help you on its own. DNA is a language, and you must know the language and the nuance of it. Otherwise, you are burning dollar bills! I don’t want you doing that; I have a deep desire for you to understand and use Self-Mastery in decoding your DNA! OK, let me continue.

Here’s why understanding your DNA is critical now more than ever.

    1. Precision Over Guesswork

Gone are the days of blindly following fad diets or generic health advice. With genetic insights, you can:

    • Discover whether you’re better suited for more protein from animals or sea life!
    • Understand how well your body metabolizes (or how it doesn’t metabolize) caffeine, alcohol, or something else …
    • Identify nutrient deficiencies that may be holding you back from your best night’s sleep, like vitamin D.

    2. Aging Gracefully

If you’ve been reading my column, Spritual Substance, you know I am all about aging gracefully. As we age, our bodies become less forgiving of poor lifestyle choices. (We see this exemplified daily at airports, Disneyland, and even on vacation.) Let me be frank about this: we indulge because we are driven by dopamine (think about all the snacking, Starbucks, daily croissants, and do I dare say, Yoplait). This hurts our bodies, pure and simple.

Nutrigenomics helps you stay ahead of the curve by addressing issues like bone density, hormonal balance, and cellular repair before they become problems. So many of my female clients face bone density issues, but learning about their bone SNPS has changed how they move forward in their lives.

    3. Empowerment Through Knowledge

Understanding your genetic blueprint isn’t just about avoiding disease — it’s about thriving. When you know what works best for your body, you can make choices supporting long-term vitality.

How I Can Help Optimize Your Genes

I’m hosting an exclusive DNA Coaching Cohort designed to help you unlock the secrets of your genes and use them to optimize every aspect of your health.

Over five sessions, we’ll explore different pathways in the body and how they relate to your unique genetic makeup. You’ll learn all about:

    1. Brain Health: Discover how your genes influence focus, memory, and mood—and what foods and supplements can enhance cognitive function. (Think, remembering where your glasses are and how to support that ADHD.)
    1. Cellular Health: Learn how to support energy production at the mitochondrial level (your cell’s engine) through targeted nutrition. (Think, no more daily 3:00 crash!)
    1. Bone Health: Understand genetic factors affecting bone density and how to prevent osteoporosis with the proper nutrients.
    1. Movement Optimization: Tailor exercise routines based on whether you’re genetically predisposed to excel at endurance or strength training. (Maybe you don’t have to work out every day; maybe less is more!)
    1. Heart Health: Decode cardiovascular risk factors and design meals that support a healthy heart.

And because I love spoiling my Sober Curator friends and readers, I am including a bonus session to tie it all together with actionable strategies for long-term success in regard to recovery. Learn more here.

    Major Benefits of Nutrigenomics:

Let me share some of my recent client stories where understanding genetics made a major impact!

My client, Sarah, a 32-year-old executive, had been battling chronic fatigue for years. After genetic testing, she discovered she had a variant in the VDR gene, which affects Vitamin D metabolism. I created a supplementation plan with a specific form of Vitamin D3, and Sarah’s energy levels improved dramatically within weeks. She went from struggling to get through the workday to having enough energy for evening workouts.

Mark, a 44-year-old software developer, had been trying to lose weight for over a decade with little success. Genetic analysis revealed he had variants in the TCF7L2 gene, associated with increased risk of insulin resistance. By adjusting his diet to include more low-glycemic foods and timing his carbohydrate intake, Mark lost 30 pounds in 6 months and significantly improved his blood sugar levels.

My client, Emily, 48-year-old mother of three, had been experiencing brain fog that was affecting her work and family life. Genetic testing showed she carried HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 variants, which are associated with gluten sensitivity. After eliminating gluten from her diet, Emily reported a significant improvement in cognitive function within just two weeks. Her ability to focus and multitask improved dramatically, allowing her to better manage her busy household. We also added Semax which made all the difference!

One of my favorite clients, Tom, a 50-year-old accountant with a family history of heart disease, was concerned about his cardiovascular health despite having normal cholesterol levels. Genetic analysis showed he had a variant in the APOE gene, which affects lipid metabolism and inflammation. Armed with this knowledge, Tom and I worked on creating a personalized diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. After six months, his inflammatory markers decreased significantly, and his doctor noted improved arterial health during his check-up. I also put him on a microdose of Reta.

Seana, a kickass, 29-year-old competitive cyclist, had been plagued by frequent injuries and slow recovery times. Her genetic profile revealed variants in the COL5A1 gene, associated with reduced collagen production and increased risk of tendon injuries. By tailoring her training regimen to include more rest days and incorporating specific collagen-boosting nutrients into her diet, Seana was able to reduce her injury frequency by 70% over the course of a year. This allowed her to train more consistently and even shave time off her personal best.

    Let’s Optimize Together

2025 is the year we stop guessing and start knowing about our health. Nutrigenomic meal sequencing isn’t just another trend — it’s the future of personalized wellness. And trust me when I say there’s no better time than now to invest in understanding your genes; you’re worth it. You didn’t get sober to sit on the sidelines of your life.

If you’re ready to take control of your health, sign up for my DNA Coaching Cohort today! Together, we’ll decode your genetic blueprint and create a plan that helps you thrive — not just survive.
