Laughing Without Liquor: 11 Comedic Women We Love

When I traded in my vodka goggles for sobriety specs, I didn’t expect to stumble into a gaggle of sober jesters—I immediately loved it! Picture this: me, a freshly minted teetotaler, clueless to the fact that comedy was anything more than a drunken giggle. Turns out, it’s a riot, stone-cold sober! I got on the laughter wagon around the same time Margaret Cho was sashaying her sober self onto stage. Talk about serendipitous timing! I became a devoted apostle of the church of chuckles. So, if you’re feeling a touch down in the dumps, let me point you to the comedic promised land. These stand-up sages are just what the doctor ordered!

Comedy, like pizza, comes in all toppings and suits every taste bud, right? (What’s your favorite topping? Mine is salami!) The concept of crowning jesters based on their gender is as quirky as asking your grandma to text you her best meme. It’s a timeless chuckle fest out there, and funny bones don’t discriminate! Yet, it’s no secret that some comediennes have this magical knack for tickling the funny rib of sisterhood—call it the shared ‘Oops, I did it again’ life moments. So, roll out the red carpet for these eleven queens of comedy who’ve got the golden ticket to the laugh-a-lot club for ladies and a fan base as diverse as a box of assorted chocolates. Get ready to nod, giggle, and belly laugh because they’re speaking everyone’s language – the universal dialect of humor.

Did your favorite make the list? If not, let us know!

#1. Tina Fey – Known for her smart and incisive humor, her work on “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” has endeared her to many.

#2. Amy Poehler – Another “SNL” alum, her brand of comedy is both uplifting and empowering, as seen on “Parks and Recreation.”  Even her MC trailer is funny!

#3. Ali Wong – Her Netflix specials, such as “Baby Cobra” and “Hard Knock Wife,” offer a raw and honest look at motherhood, marriage, and the female experience.

#4. Mindy Kaling – With her own series, “The Mindy Project,” and her tenure on “The Office,” she brings a sharp and self-referential wit to her work.

#5. Wanda Sykes – Her stand-up specials and television appearances provide a powerful blend of social commentary and personal narrative.

#6. Ellen DeGeneres – Before stepping down from her long-running talk show, Ellen was known for her observational humor and kind-heartedness in comedy.

#7. Joan Rivers – Now passed, she was a pioneer for women in comedy, known for her acerbic wit and boundary-pushing jokes.

#8. Sarah Silverman – Her comedy tackles controversial topics with intelligence and an unapologetically bold approach.

#9. Nikki Glaser – Known for her blunt and candid style, she offers a fresh perspective on sex, dating, and the nuances of being a modern woman.

#10. Issa Rae – She rose to fame with her YouTube web series “Awkward Black Girl” and continued to capture audiences with her critically acclaimed HBO series “Insecure.” Rae’s comedy is nuanced and relatable, tackling the everyday experiences of modern black women with authenticity and sharp humor.

#11. Phoebe Waller-Bridge – Known for her dark, dry wit in the critically lauded BBC series “Fleabag,” which she created and starred in. Her work deals with complex female characters and breaks the fourth wall to discuss themes around femininity, love, and self-perception in a refreshingly honest way.
