This week’s pick, Sober Carpenter’s Uber Hopped, comes to us from the great white north. Out of the bi-lingual province of Quebec, Sober Carpenter was founded in 2019 by two brothers who wanted to add sobriety to their lives but found few tasty options for the beer connoisseurs they had become. Isn’t that always how it goes? Sober Carpenter offers a wide variety of brews, including limited edition batches.
Sober Carpenter’s Uber Hopped already stands out as it sits tall in its 16 oz. can (that’s a pint for you Canadians and Brits). In addition, like only a few of their competitors, Sober Carpenter puts the IBU count right on the side of the can, showing you what to expect in the way of bitterness. They also include a description of which malts and which hops they use. A mental flavor profile is made long before you even get the beer open.
How Does it Pour?
With a name like “Uber Hopped”, you know that Sober Carpenter has me expecting a burst of hoppiness in my mouth, as well as in my nose, and with an IBU of 43, my expectations are balanced. With the crack of the can, the hoppy aroma fills the air. The use of Citra, Simcoe, and cascade hops are apparent in the air, and soon to be in my mouth! Sober Carpenter’s Uber Hopped pours with a stark white head and a lighter color, but the thick haziness of the beer promises a full flavor.
How Does it Taste?
The hoppy treat from Sober Carpenter coats your tongue straight down the middle with hoppy flavor and feels heavy in your mouth, much to the contrary of its lighter color. The finish adds a little bit of a piney flavor and begs the question of where it’s from until you realize it’s from Canada. Pine trees are everywhere.
Overall, it’s nice to have another 16oz can in the collection, and the hoppy flavor of Sober Carpenter’s Uber Hopped is a pleasant surprise. Untappd gives it 2.9 out of 5, and I think I would be sitting right around that same rating if I had to pick a number. I could do without the piney finish, but that’s my preference. I’m excited to find more beers by this brewery and fill my face hole with them!
