Nobody warns you about the real dangers of house-sitting.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Seattle watching my good friends’ house and dogs while they were at their son’s baseball tournament in eastern WA. Lovely home. Sweet dogs. And there, humming quietly on a bar cart in the dining room, the appliance that would ruin me: a nugget ice maker.

Four days. That’s all it took. By day two, I was building drinks I had no name for. By day four, the dogs and I had an understanding: I fill their bowls, slide them some treats, and they don’t judge how many trips I make to the ice machine.

I got home, asked my mom if we needed one (I’m currently living with my elderly parents, and yes, that’s a whole other article), and she said yes. I have never hit Add to Cart faster in my life. And I run a shopping column.

    What I bought

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker in Stone White, with the side tank and the scale-inhibiting filter. It makes 38 pounds of ice a day, which sounds excessive until you meet me.

    What I love

The ice itself. This is the headline. It’s that pebble-style nugget ice, and the texture is what I can only describe as a soft crunch. Crunchy, but forgiving. You can chew it recreationally without writing your dentist an apology letter. If you know Sonic ice, this is that, on tap, on demand, in your kitchen.

It’s smart. The Opal connects to your phone and actually tells you useful things: when it needs cleaning, when the water is low. My appliances now communicate with me more clearly than some people I’ve dated.

The side tank. Three-quarters of a gallon means it keeps up with my ice consumption, which is a genuine engineering achievement, because this thing runs all day, every day at our house. It makes ice. I take the ice. I tell it how wonderful I think it is. We have a beautiful economy going.

Please note: That’s our Wi-Fi extender on top of the ice machine, because the only thing more important than crushed ice is good wifi.

    The honest part

It’s not cheap, and it’s not invisible; it lives on your counter like a small appliance with main character energy. If you have an air fryer, it’s basically the same size. It also needs regular cleaning (the app nags you, helpfully). If you drink three iced things a year, skip it.

But if you’re sober like me, here’s the thing nobody tells you: the beverage ritual doesn’t leave when the alcohol does. It gets bigger. The pretty glass, the good ice, the drink you actually look forward to at 4 p.m. This machine is infrastructure for that life. It’s already powering my accidental new signature drink, the Overcaffeinated Dirty Shirley. I still drink A LOT, there’s just no booze in my glass or altering my mind.

Verdict: the fastest Add to Cart of my year, zero regrets, and my mom agrees, which is the only five-star review that counts.

#ADDTOCART: Grab the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra here. Or, I’m also happy to let you know when I need to hire someone to dog sit.

    FAQ

What is nugget ice and why is everyone obsessed with it?
Nugget ice (also called pebble ice or Sonic ice) is soft, chewable, and absorbs whatever you’re drinking. It’s the ice that makes a good mocktail feel like an event. Once you have it at home, regular ice cubes feel like a personal insult.

Which nugget ice maker does Alysse use?
The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker in Stone White, with the side tank and the scale-inhibiting filter. It makes 38 pounds of ice a day. Yes, 38 pounds.

How much does the GE Profile Opal 2.0 cost?
Around $500 with the side tank. It is not cheap. It is also not something she regrets even slightly.

Is the GE Profile Opal 2.0 worth it if you’re sober?
Especially if you’re sober. The beverage ritual doesn’t disappear when the alcohol does. It gets bigger. Good ice is infrastructure. It’s the difference between a drink you tolerate and one you actually look forward to at 4 p.m.

Does the GE Profile Opal 2.0 require a lot of maintenance?
It needs regular cleaning, and the app will remind you. Repeatedly. Think of it as a very hydrated, slightly naggy roommate. The scale-inhibiting filter helps with water quality and keeps the machine running well.

What drinks does Alysse make with her nugget ice maker?
Everything. But especially the Overcaffeinated Shirley — her accidental sober riff on the Dirty Shirley, built during an SEO spiral and now a permanent fixture in her rotation.
