Chip chip cheerio, mate! This beer joins us from the land of all amazing non-alcoholic beers, the creators of the colonizing original India Pale Ale: Jolly old England. Big Drop Brewing has brought us beers in the past and their selection continues to grow, offering us all sorts of styles and fun names. IPAs, stouts, wheats, and now, something to add to your summer selection.
This week, we are drinking Coba Maya from Big Drop Brewing. This is a Mexican-style lager that is looking for its mate in lime and a laid-back attitude. Perfect for mowing the lawn or having a nice siesta. Based just on name and style alone, the expectation from Big Drop Brewing is a light-colored crisp lager with a little malt kiss at the end.
Cracking the black-top can and releasing the aromas into the air, you can smell the light malt and hop balance that Big Drop Brewing packed into the Coba Maya. When you pour it into your glass, you may be surprised by exactly how light it is. Like, if you took Corona and went two shades lighter, almost to a champagne color, you would be there. The head is a nice crisp white and you will want nothing more than to drop a lime into this glass.
When this light and crisp lager hits your lips, the first thought is refreshment. Big Drop Brewing puts a lot of work into its balance of malts and German hops to create a hearty malt-forward profile that could only be complemented by the sweet green citrus that goes with this brew. This flavor profile is perfect for a light beer to drink throughout the summer to stay cool and keep hydrated.
Untappd gives Coba Maya by Big Drop Brewing a 3 out of 5, and I suppose that’s a fair overall score, but if you’re looking for something easy and light, that score would definitely be higher in my opinion. With the overindulgent options of IPAs out there, it’s hard to find a great lager, and Big Drop Brewing is doing its part to fill that void in the NA space. Go try it out and decide for yourself.
