The official Camp Sober Fest packing list includes a pool floatie, a flashlight with extra batteries, a costume for theme night, and, in the organization’s own enthusiastic punctuation, a “Onesie!!”
That is not a wellness retreat packing list. That is a summer camp packing list.
Which is exactly the point.
Camp Sober Fest launched in October 2022 and has been quietly building one of the more interesting propositions in sober travel: an actual sleepaway camp for adults in recovery. Not a retreat with a lake view and a juice program. A camp. High ropes courses, archery, karaoke, a talent show, campfire meetings. The kind of weekend where you face your fear of heights before lunch and your fear of public singing after dinner.
Their most recent session wrapped this past August at Sequoia Lake, California, tucked into the Sierra Nevada mountains, running August 19 through 23. I have been following their account since, watching grown adults on ziplines, grown adults in matching camp merch, grown adults crying at closing campfire. It sent me down a rabbit hole on their site, and what I found there made me want to tell you about the next one.
Spring Break, Sober Edition
The next Camp Sober Fest runs March 17 through 21, 2027 in Trinity, Texas, set among the pine forests and lakes of East Texas. They are billing it as adult sober spring break camp, which is a phrase I did not have on my 2027 bingo card and am now fully invested in.
The details: $525 per person, all-inclusive, Wednesday through Sunday. The activity list reads like someone raided a church camp brochure and removed the curfew: high ropes, archery, ziplining, horseback riding, a rifle range, and something called the Wet Willie Slide.
Let me repeat the number. Five hundred twenty-five dollars. All-inclusive. In a sober travel market where a long weekend of guided journaling can run four figures, that price is doing something intentional. This is not a luxury product. It is an access product.
Who Built This
Camp Sober Fest was founded by Breezy Nowlan, who got the idea through her experience with the Rebellion Dogs — a sober community built around the idea that recovery doesn’t have to look serious — where she found the sense of belonging she wanted to recreate at scale. The first camp drew over 150 participants, and by the end of the weekend, campers were reportedly crying because they did not want to leave.
The organization describes its camps as being for people in recovery who have a sincere desire to stop drinking and using.
If that phrasing sounds familiar, it should. It tells you who is holding the flashlight at campfire. This is a camp built by recovery people, for recovery people, welcoming everyone from day-one newcomers to the decades-in crowd. Attendance at every activity is completely optional, meetings included. You can do the ropes course and skip the share circle. Nobody is taking attendance.
Why This Works
Here is my theory on why adult sober camp hits different, and it is not the archery.
Drinking gave a lot of us permission to be ridiculous. The costume party, the terrible karaoke, the cannonball into the pool at midnight. Somewhere in sobriety, plenty of people quietly retired all of that along with the wine — and then wondered why sober Tuesday felt exactly like drunk Tuesday, just with better skin.
Camp Sober Fest hands the ridiculous back. The talent show is the program. The onesie is the assignment. You are not paying $525 to process anything. You are paying $525 to remember that you are fun.
That is not a retreat. That is a repair.
The Practical Stuff
The Texas camp is at Camp Cullen in Trinity, about an hour and twenty minutes from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and organizers say they are working on a charter bus to and from Houston. Lodging is cabin-style, so recalibrate your expectations from hotel to bunk. Bring the earplugs. The packing list mentions them for a reason.
The California camp at Sequoia Lake is expected to return next summer, so if Texas in March does not work, the Sierra Nevada in August is the other door.
Registration for Trinity is open now at campsoberfest.com. The onesie is not optional. Spiritually speaking.
