Dearest Sober Reader,
If you’re searching for a salacious distraction to carry you through the winter months, I should think you could do much worse than viewing the first half of the latest Bridgerton season. With the early episodes centered on Benedict Bridgerton, we quickly learn of his excessive imbibing and ‘rakish’ ways. Whispers float through the halls of high society while Benedict experiments in every conceivable manner, both in the bottle and the bed. He seems determined to conceal his true tapestry of emotions – building a wall between all others and his heart, such that many a gentleman and lady in recovery can recall the burden of those weighty bricks. Shall Benedict find a path through his pain and settle down, as his ever-hopeful ma-ma dearly dreams? Or will the drink pull him further into the depths of despair over which he has been dangling his feet, taunting fate?
The tale, as it unfolds, turns to a Cinderella affair, where fantasy and reality seem content to fill each other’s dance cards through the evening. Benedict Bridgerton finds a moment of clarity, revealing his deepest fear that he might be unworthy of love in a tender display that defies his reputation as a ‘free spirit.’ As is often the case, those who take tea at the 12-step tables can confirm, vulnerability forges a spark of relatability that just might break the dark spell under which Mr. Bridgerton finds himself.
Intriguingly, only four episodes are needed to stitch the familiar themes of longing to belong, the universality of love and loss, and the oft-quoted assertion that ‘connection is the opposite of addiction.’ Whether Lord, Lady, Maid, or the Queen herself, the whole of the population seems to grapple with these existential concerns while scenes of debauchery are cleverly inserted for even the most thrill-seeking of audiences. This author, for one, will be eagerly awaiting the remainder of the episodes in order to capture and savor the ‘pinnacle,’ as it were.
Yours Truly,
Lady Wright
