Best Day Brewing continues to represent the craft beer scene out of Sausalito, California, with a lineup of nonalcoholic beers that covers everything from hop-heavy IPAs to crisp pilsners. One thing I’ve come to appreciate about Best Day Brewing is that they don’t try to reinvent every style. Sometimes they simply aim to make a great version of a classic, and that’s exactly the kind of confidence you want from a brewery putting its name on traditional beer styles.
This week we are drinking Wild American from Best Day Brewing. Best Day Brewing bills this as a pilsner, though the can design and patriotic branding immediately had me wondering if this was going to be their nod to America’s favorite macro lager. Expectations for a pilsner are always pretty straightforward: crisp, clean, balanced, and crushable. Wild American pours a crystal-clear golden yellow with a bright white head that would make any lawn mower jealous. The aromas drifting into my sniffy holes are a blend of malt, roasted hops, and barley, giving Best Day Brewing a solid start before the first sip ever hits my flavor funnel.
Once Wild American makes its way into my face hole, the flavor pretty much confirms my suspicions. Best Day Brewing delivers a light lager profile with just enough extra backbone to separate it from your everyday domestic beer. The malt and barley take center stage while a subtle roasted hop character lingers in the background, creating a brew that feels familiar without becoming boring. It’s balanced, bready, and bright, but it never quite reaches the crisp, clean perfection that made Nature Pils such a standout. If the goal was to create an NA beer that tips its cap toward Budweiser, I’d say Best Day Brewing pulled it off with macro-inspired maltiness and just enough craft character to keep things interesting.
Untappd gives Wild American from Best Day Brewing a 3.3 out of 5. I have to agree with the crowd on this one, as I also landed at a 3.3 out of 5. It’s an enjoyable beer and another solid addition to the Best Day Brewing lineup, but if I’m standing in front of the fridge with both of their pilsners staring back at me, I’m reaching for Nature Pils every single time. Of course, that’s just one guy’s opinion from behind a beard and a pair of taste buds, so grab one yourself and let your own sober sip station settle the score.
