One of our very own Sober Curator contributors wanted to know…

Do people really still take online courses on their own, or do they prefer [learning] communities online/in person?

    Hi Curious Curator!

Well, you are asking the right question in this high-speed, tech-infused world of ours! Let’s break this down, shall we? First off, online courses are like a double-shot espresso — fast, efficient, and straight to the point. You can zoom through them at your own pace, with zero distractions from chatty classmates or that one teacher who loves to hear themselves talk. Sounds dreamy, right? But, just like that espresso, it can also be a little flat. You’re getting one perspective — the course creator’s. And while that’s cool if you’re vibing with their expertise, it might leave you thirsting for more.

Now, if you’re diving into something where variety is the spice of life, like, I dunno, philosophy or art history, you’re probably gonna want some lively debate and differing opinions. Enter community learning — it’s like a potluck where everyone brings their own dish of knowledge to the table. You get more flavors, more insight, more “Whoa, I never thought of that!” moments.

So, what’s your move? Here’s the checklist of life decisions to consider:

    • Deadlines, baby! Got one hanging over your head? Go solo with that self-paced course. No deadline? Then, yeah, let the discussions flow!
    • The Teacher Factor: Is the instructor the Yoda of your topic? If so, ride or die for that course. If you’re unsure, maybe you’ll want some opinions beyond the course author’s.
    • Course Topic Vibes: Some things, like hardcore technical skills, might not need a lot of outside perspectives. But, for stuff like social issues, creativity, or anything that sparks debate, community learning is where it’s at.
    • Why You’re Doing This: Is this for a degree, work, or just ‘cause you’re trying to level up your mind? Knowing your “why” helps you decide.

Finally, the million-dollar question: Are you a social butterfly or a solo learner? If you’re more “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee,” and you need to recharge after a group chat, maybe stick to solo sailing. But, if you’re the type who wants to break out in spontaneous debates and host class discussions at your favorite coffeehouse? Go all in, baby! Get those group interactions going and let the ideas fly.

Hope these tidbits help you make your choice, and remember: learning is YOUR jam, so make it as funky as you are!

    Catch you later,

    MRS. (W)RIGHT
