What “The Traitors” Season 4 Teaches Us About Trusting Ourselves

I did not expect a Scottish castle full of reality stars whispering about murder to become one of my weekly rituals, and yet here we are.

This season of “The Traitors” is peak television. Cloaked figures slipping into a turret under cover of darkness. A Round Table where grown adults deliver dramatic speeches at Shakespearean levels. Alan Cumming sweeping into the room like he has been personally styled by Rachel Zoe for a cover of Vogue: Castles Edition. His dog Lala wandering through scenes like a small, furry executive producer. Housewives serving full personality before coffee. Gamers analyzing and foreign alliances. And for reasons that remain unclear, a castle full of people under psychological stress fighting for salmon at breakfast – if there is any left.

It is theatrical. It is ridiculous. It is deeply fun. And beneath all the velvet cloaks, dramatic lighting, and suspicious glances exchanged near decorative graves, it offers a surprisingly useful look at self-trust.

Because at its core, “The Traitors” is a show about perception. Who listens to what they notice. Who talks themselves out of it. Who gets swept into the energy of the group. Who can stay connected to themselves while chaos unfolds around them.

Watching it with that lens makes the whole thing even better.

    1. Your first instinct deserves at least a moment of respect

Every episode includes someone sensing exactly what is happening and then immediately convincing themselves they are wrong. Kristen will clock something subtle and thoughtful, only to soften it when the room starts spinning. Yam Yam reads the room  like he has been training for this his entire life, even if he occasionally gets pulled into the swirl of suspicion and theatrics. Someone notices a reaction that feels off. Someone else names a theory that almost lands. Then a louder voice enters and suddenly that initial read feels less solid.

Within minutes, they are apologizing for bringing it up.

At one point this season, Michael Rappaport confidently uses the word “conniving” while also making it clear he does not  know what it means. The delivery is bold. The certainty is high. The accuracy is…null. And yet the confidence alone is enough to shift the energy in the room.

Watching this play out is both hilarious and familiar. Most of us have experienced the moment where something in us quietly registers a question or concern and we override it because someone else sounds more sure. Self-trust does not require certainty. It simply asks that you stay with your own perception long enough to consider that it might be worth listening to.

    2. The Round Table is a masterclass in group pressure

If you want to watch self-doubt unfold in real time, look no further than the Round Table. A Housewife delivers a compelling speech and suddenly everyone is nodding. One of the Gamers outlines a theory with Survivor-level focus and the room shifts again. Someone gets emotional. Someone gets defensive. Alan circles the table delighted.

Meanwhile, Rob sits there with the calm presence of someone who knows exactly where he is at all times, watching the dynamics unfold like a strategic chess match.

It is fascinating to watch how quickly people abandon their own thinking once the group energy swings. No one wants to be the lone voice pushing back. It becomes easier to go along than to stand slightly apart.

The contestants who stay most grounded are not always the most vocal. They listen to what everyone says, but they do not immediately discard their own read. They allow space for other opinions without losing their internal footing. That quiet steadiness is a form of self-trust that makes all the difference, whether you are at a Round Table in Scotland or in any group setting where strong personalities dominate the conversation.

    3. Calm is a genuine advantage

In a setting designed to make everyone slightly paranoid, the players who manage to stay relatively calm stand out immediately. Stephen maintains a level of composure that feels almost suspicious in itself. Donna Kelsey moves through the castle with the reassuring steadiness of someone who has already seen everything and packed snacks just in case. Tara and Johnny continue to be so endearing and decent that many viewers have collectively decided they must be protected at all costs as national treasures.

That kind of grounded presence matters. When you are not in full panic mode, you see more. You listen more carefully. You are less likely to make impulsive accusations while standing next to what appears to be your very own grave.

The environment is designed to heighten anxiety. The blood fountain. Fire! The is the phrase “you have been murdered” delivered via envelope with a wax seal. Of course emotions run high. Of course reactions get big. The contestants who maintain some internal steadiness have a clear advantage. They are able to take in information without immediately spiraling. They can respond instead of react. That is a quiet superpower.

    4. Big personalities are entertaining, not always accurate

This season is blessed with personalities who fully understand the assignment. Lisa Rinna enters every scene with impeccable timing and total commitment. Monet delivers reactions worthy of their own highlight reel. Candice brings full theatrical presence to every conversation. Maura has a hat for every day of the week. It is spectacular to watch.

It is also a reminder that a compelling performance does not always equal a correct conclusion. Confidence can sway a room. Charisma can redirect a conversation. A dramatic delivery in excellent lighting can make a theory sound far more convincing than it actually is.

Enjoying the spectacle does not require outsourcing your own judgment. You can appreciate the flair, and the sheer entertainment value without assuming the loudest or most confident person has the clearest read. Self-trust often means quietly checking in with your own perspective even while the show around you is stealing the spotlight.

    5. You can adjust your thinking without abandoning yourself

Even the most perceptive contestants misread situations. That is inevitable in a game built on incomplete information and misdirection. Kristen recalibrates thoughtfully. Ron shifts his perspective with humor. Others double down and later have to backpedal to try and save themselves. It happens to everyone.

Being wrong in this environment is part of navigating a complicated situation where whoever sliced you some turkey at the feast could have just killed you.

Trusting yourself does not mean getting every call right. It means staying connected to your own awareness and adjusting as you learn more. It means being willing to say, “This is what I see right now,” without needing that read to be perfect. The contestants who handle this best are the ones who remain flexible without completely disconnecting from themselves. They revise without unraveling.

“The Traitors” is outrageous television. It is part murder mystery, part social experiment, part high-fashion fever dream. One moment someone is delivering a heartfelt plea for loyalty. The next, contestants in Land Rovers are pulling up to a lake full of caskets. The tone swings wildly between deadly serious and completely absurd, which is exactly why it works.

It is also, somehow, a weekly reminder that staying connected to yourself matters. You can listen to others without losing your own read. You can hold your perspective even when the room gets noisy. You can change your mind without losing your center. You can move through uncertainty with a sense of internal footing.

And if nothing else, it has given many of us the habit of wandering through our homes whispering “murrrrder” for absolutely no reason at all.
