Tuesday Tunes Song of the Week: Return of the Mack

If I wasn’t able to cope with recovery using humor I don’t know where I would be. Who else feels betrayed by alcohol and drugs? They lie to us.
I thought I was beautiful, gregarious and the life of the party when I used. It turns out I was an anxiety-ridden, picked and scabbed over face ball of annoying at the end.
I am coming up on my anniversary and this is always a time of reflection for me. I begin warning my friends/family that around now is when I “get weird”. It’s like this every year and it happens because I take time to reflect on what life was like before and what life is like now.
Alcohol and drugs promised me a life of no cares, no worries, less anxiety, less depression (at least that’s what all the marketing campaigns say, am I right?) turns out they lie. I may have seen those benefits in the beginning but as I progressed in the disease I had more care, more worries, more anxiety, and more depression.
This song makes me immediately think of alcohol and drugs, I would have died for them had I not been given this gift of recovery.
So as I reflect and think about life before I keep this song on replay in my brain. I will continue to dance and create moments of joy in my life even as I heal and reflect.
