Welcome to East Texas, y’all — where the bullets fly faster than the gossip, and martinis are practically a love language. The Hunting Wives serves up a Southern-fried mess of obsession, seduction, and murder, all garnished with enough red-state absurdity to make even the most seasoned Real Housewife blush. If Big Little Lies and Desperate Housewives got blackout drunk on White Claw and stumbled into a shooting range, this would be their love child.
Let’s get one thing straight: Sophie O’Neill (played by Brittany Snow, bless her heart) is NOT okay. She’s traded in her city-slicker PR life in Boston for a slow-burn suburban nightmare with hubby and child in tow. She’s the kind of woman who says she’s “just bored” when she’s actually imploding. Enter Margot Banks (Malin Åkerman in full femme fatale mode), the red-headed bombshell with a Glock, a secret “arrangement,” and a clique of Stepford wives who make Regina George look like a church camp counselor.
These women — and I use the term loosely — don’t just sip rosé at bible study. They pound martinis, bang each other’s husbands (and wives), and host midnight target practice sessions in the woods like it’s Girl Scout camp for sociopaths. Sophie, despite allegedly being sober and scandal-averse (lol), decides to hop aboard this hot mess express with the enthusiasm of someone who’s never seen a single episode of Dateline.

Now, let’s talk alcohol. Pastor Pete clutches his flask tighter than his Bible, and Sophie… well, honey, I’m not saying she’s an alcoholic, but if drunken disaster were an Olympic sport, she’d take home the gold. She’s a cautionary tale wrapped in a cashmere cardigan — a textbook example of why “mommy needs wine” memes should be banned for public safety.
The acting? It’s serviceable. Think: soap opera energy with a prestige TV budget. Malin brings the sexy chaos, Brittany brings the unhinged denial, and the rest of the cast rotates between scenery chewing and outright caricature. Chrissy Metz is criminally underused (until suddenly she’s not), and Dermot Mulroney is here for… reasons?
And yet — I binged it. All eight episodes. Two days. I was sick, yes, but also weirdly captivated. It’s like watching a Gucci-wearing dumpster fire in slow motion. You know it’s a mess, but you have to see how it ends. Spoiler: not well.
The Mindful Binge Sobees Score: 3 out of 5

Not high art. Not even high drama. But if you’re into slutty church ladies, queer entanglements, and secondhand shame, The Hunting Wives might just scratch that chaotic itch. Bonus points for tackling red-state hypocrisy and gun culture with a smirk — even if it ultimately trades insight for shock value.
So pour yourself a mocktail, clutch your pearls, pull on your designer denim, and dive in. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
