Brian Compton is a recovery coach from Concord, North Carolina. He started his own recovery coaching business after discovering for himself that a life of freedom from addiction was possible. Frustrated with traditional methods of recovery, and refusing to resolve to go to meetings for the rest of his life, he sought recovery from a more holistic perspective.

Brian is a recovery consultant who helps humans struggling with addiction to maintain sobriety and THRIVE – not just survive – life in recovery. He has personally helped dozens of those struggling to escape the trap of addiction by creating a shift in their mindset on how to handle life post-addiction. He’s supported friends and fellow addicts/alcoholics both in-person locally in North Carolina and remotely via Zoom. Brian helps people proactively navigate their recovery and no longer feel like they are stuck in active addiction.

Sober Spotlight Q&A with Brian Compton

What’s Your Sobriety Date?

June 27th, 2020

When did you get into Recovery Coaching?

Recovery coaching started at the end of May 2021. Prior to that, I’ve been informally helping people and working on all of my certifications. I’m a natural teacher. Having done health and fitness coaching for a long time, this feels like such a natural transition for me. I’m very excited about the future.

What’s your favorite non-alcoholic beverage of choice?

I love iced coffee black and Adrenaline Shoc Energy Drinks. Adrenaline Shoc (A SHOC) is a clean, performance-driven energy drink designed to help you reach your peak. Crush your goals with 300mg of plant-powered caffeine boosted by electrolytes from ocean minerals and BCAA’s for muscle recovery. 10 killer flavors, zero sugar, or preservatives.

What advice would you give someone that is new in recovery?

Find someone that you trust in recovery and be honest with that person. Staying open and vulnerable with another person, while also learning to be patient, is really key.

What advice would you go back and give your newly sober self?

Get a coach or a recovery mentor earlier on. Don’t wait!

Do you have a favorite #Quitlit or Motivational book that has impacted your recovery?

Recovery 2.0 by Tommy Rosen. I appreciate the more personal development and spiritual recovery angle vs 12-Step. It is very aligned with my personal take on recovery.

How has recovery impacted your life for the better?

How hasn’t it? Everything is better. I’m more present, more creative, more engaged, and more accountable.

How to you practice good self-care?

I love walking outside without my phone, journaling, weight training, and playing basketball with my four-year-old.

What does your meditation practice look like?

I usually try to do something mid-day and I don’t overthink it. I close my eyes and focus on my breath. No timer. I just do it for as long as I feel like I need it that day. Usually between 5-25 minutes. I practice doing the same thing falling asleep, breathing techniques, and regular journaling. For me, running is like a moving meditation. I get lost in time.

What advice would you give to someone in recovery that is considering “going public” with their recovery? (Aka recovering out loud)

Start small. Start with someone that you trust to be open and vulnerable with. Don’t feel like you have to do it all by a certain time or a certain way. Don’t overthink it. Start with a few people and then grow from there.

What is something you are proud of since starting your recovery journey?

Helping others get sober. When I get messages and text messages from people I’ve helped impact…there’s nothing like it.

Let’s talk Recovery TikTok

Adding TikTok was an incredible tool to my recovery. That’s how I starting being public. I’m not saying this would work for everyone, but it really helped me. If I had to name one other Recovery TikTok account to follow it would be @nicole_villa__ . She’s a Mental Health advocate and she’s really great.

Talk about your recovery coaching approach

What sets my coaching apart is that I don’t just focus on drinking. I refer to my method as “Deep Recovery” because works at physical and emotional levels. I help my clients find a purpose worth pursuing. Environmentally, I help my clients look at all of the factors of life and sobriety becomes a bi-product of that.

Is there a nonprofit organization that you support?

Yes! The Jeff Gordon Child Foundation supports pediatric cancer research. Also, fun fact, my wife works there.

SOBER POP CULTURE TIME!

Name one of your favorite pop culture history moments:

When Tom Brady won the Superbowl in the past year. The moment Tom was hammered and throwing the trophy across the water to a group on another boat. That moment normalized how alcohol is everywhere. Had the guys on the other boat not caught the trophy, it would have sunk. Here’s a guy that’s is a 7 times Superbowl champion, perpetuating that drinking (being drunk) is cool. “If he can do it why can’t I do it?” The shows the role media plays in glamorizing addiction.

What’s on your playlist right now?

For music, that’s easy. It’s Eminem, Rap, or Early 00s Pop Punk. It really flip-flops depending on the day. I’m also really enjoying Jesse Mogle @fromsobrietytorecovery
