This summer, the heart of Manhattan will once again pulse with music, laughter, and raw vulnerability as Sober Songs makes its long-anticipated return to the stage. The original musical—written, composed, and lyrically penned by New York Times bestselling author Michael Levin—begins previews on August 30, with an official opening on September 6 at Theatre Row’s Theatre Three, running through September 28th.
🎶 A Story Told in Melody and Truth
At its core, Sober Songs is more than a musical—it’s a mirror held up to the messiness of recovery and the unexpected beauty of connection. Set within the intimate, confessional walls of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, the show introduces us to six young adults, each navigating their turbulent journey through sobriety. Their guide? Cap, a tough but compassionate sponsor who knows that honesty can be a lifeline.
Through biting humor, awkward self-awareness, and eventually soul-baring vulnerability, the characters untangle their relationships with addiction, identity, love, and relapse. Their stories unfold through an original score that fuses country, rock, and blues, echoing the emotional highs and lows of the recovery experience.
🗣 A Message from the Creator
Levin, who has credited sobriety as a cornerstone of his transformation, crafted Sober Songs to celebrate the strength and beauty found in the recovery community.
“Sobriety gave me everything, and I wanted to share that message through Sober Songs,” Levin shared. “Recovery isn’t just possible—it’s powerful, joyful, and full of life. 12-step recovery creates a unique situation where differences fade away and lives are transformed. Meetings create a safe space for people from diverse backgrounds to come together with a common goal.”
Levin was also recently interviewed by The Sober Curator read the conversation here, where he expanded on his vision to bring stories of recovery into mainstream art and culture.
🎬 Behind the Curtain
The show’s deeply personal tone is enhanced by director Chris Mackin, who brings lived empathy to the production.
“Having witnessed loved ones struggle with addiction, I was immediately drawn to the show’s raw honesty and its powerful blend of country, rock, and blues,” Mackin said. “For me, this production is about more than recovery—it’s about connection, resilience, and the power of community.”
