Drunk on Covid, Sober on Zoom is the coffee table book you never knew you needed, until now. I take my role as a Sober Curator very seriously. Mmm ok fine, maybe it’s more like a serious addiction to recovery content. I comb the internet like an Olympic-trained athlete, always hunting for new (or new to me) recovery-based content. So, when I stumbled across the Global Sober Series, I knew I needed to know more.

Sober Curator Pro Tip: These books are for AA/NA junkies. If 12-step isn’t your jam, that’s fine. Then you’ll probably want to move along from this article. I don’t want to waste your time. But for those of you that are like me, and can’t get enough about the history of addiction, along with the history of Alcoholics Anonymous, then keep reading my sober friend.

    About the Global Sober Series:

Global Sober Series takes you the reader on multiple journeys around the world celebrating interesting people, the history and foundations of AA. The Global Sober Series consists of eight books. The beautiful clothbound over-sized coffee table books are hand-stitched, gold embossed with a full-color dust jacket. Inside you will find hundreds of pages filled with amazing photographs from the anonymous AA writer and global traveler.  This series of books will give you a unique look into the world of AA that you must experience for yourself.

Interviewing the anonymous author of the Global Sober Series

Peter T. was 23 years sober when he took the advice of his sponsor and started writing. A few months later, with hundreds of cocktail napkins covered with thoughts, Peter realized he was a storyteller. With his 23 years in long-term recovery and a Rolodex filled with stories, he still craved to learn more. He planned to quench this thirst for knowledge for the people of AA by traveling the world and getting to know people from all walks of life that had found themselves in the membership of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Today Peter T. is 36 years sober and he has no plans to slow down on his book publishing. He’s currently working on his Greatest Hits Book. “People love magazine size books“, he shared with me. As someone who ran a city magazine for nearly a decade, I couldn’t argue with him. To this day I love my magazines and coffee table books. I have stacks of them all over the house and piled into bookshelves.

He’s also working on a book called Noble Sober, a suggestion from his sponsor, on being noble in sobriety. As Peter talked about what commitment and faith in something look like, I couldn’t help hang onto his every word thinking to myself “I am a woman of honor and dignity now. But I sure wasn’t before I got sober.” As he kept recounting different stories to me and nuggets of historical moments, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d just discovered my own Sober-Smithsonian museum.

Who is this guy? I can assure you that he does exist because I Zoomed with him for nearly an hour. Me from my dining room table that has turned into my home office and him from some lush park somewhere in the Santa Barbara area, while he was walking his ex-wife’s tiny Chihuahua. Peter lives in Spain a good portion of the year but was back in the states at the time of this interview.

Peter has traveled to all corners of the globe and could tell stories until the end of time. While he admits that writing and researching keep him sober, Peter is quick to remind me that he is being of service. That these books, this series, they aren’t about him. While these books are a tribute to a program of action that saved his life, they are also so much more than that. This series truly shows how AA works for people all around the globe, with different cultures, backgrounds, and religions.

    The Global Sober Series

    • Global Sober: A global journey which leads to interesting people and places… All celebrating the foundation of AA.
    • Zen Sober: The journey continues from our first book, Global Sober, celebrating AA across the globe, from Kyoto to Reykjavik, from San Francisco to Shanghai.
    • Generation Sober: Generation Sober offers an interesting look into the experiences and perspectives of AA and its “next generation” members. (AA meetings at Burning Man are a trip!)
    • Future Sober: “When I came into AA, the only thing that I was ever promised was that I would be able to stay away from one drink, for one day at a time. Therefore, giving me a future sober.”
    • United Sober Anonymous: We the people…It’s a “we” program. 20 places in 20 days in America. Getting a 20/20 vision.
    • Northern Lights: To Thine Own Self Be True North. (An Artic tour of AA)
    • Liquid Sober: is about being more than just dry. How the healing quality of water enhances sobriety.
    • Drunk on Covid, Sober on Zoom: Where AA, TV, and Technology merge because of Global Pandemic
