Falling in Love with Cacao: The Hormonal Harmony Superfood

If you’ve ever wondered why cacao is often celebrated as a superfood, let me take you through its remarkable benefits, especially for women’s hormone balance and cycle regulation. Allow me to explain the deep relationship women have with dark chocolate – IYKYK. 

Cacao’s Nutritional Powerhouse 

Cacao is often touted as a superfood, and for good reason. This powerful plant is rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, polyphenols, flavonoids, theobromine, phenylethylamine, magnesium, and iron. Alexander Humboldt, a noted naturalist, once stated that never in nature is there such nutritional richness packed into a single small space as found in a cacao bean. These nutrients are crucial for our heart, brain, nervous system, and immune system health, making cacao a true marvel. 

The Queen of Plants for Women’s Health 

One of the standout benefits of cacao is its unparalleled impact on women’s health. Women, particularly those within the fertility window (15 to 49 years old), have distinct nutritional needs, and it’s fascinating how cacao aligns perfectly with those needs. The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, often referred to in modern medicine (rather patriarchally) as PMS, is where cacao shines as a balancing force. 

How Cacao Supports the Luteal Phase

During the luteal phase, our serotonin levels (the “happiness hormone”) naturally drop, while cortisol (the stress hormone) tends to rise. Simultaneously, our bodies’ levels of magnesium and iron decrease. Here’s where cacao steps in: it helps lower cortisol levels, boosts serotonin production, and replenishes magnesium. It even relaxes the uterine muscles, acting as an all-around stress buster and mood enhancer. Simply put, cacao is a hero for reducing those dreaded PMS symptoms and creating a balanced, more harmonious hormonal state. 

Fertility and Overall Women’s Health 

Cacao is not just about cycle regulation; it’s also deeply connected to fertility and overall women’s health. Researchers like Lara Breeden highlight the profound importance of ovulation for maintaining the health of bones, brain function, nervous system, and immune system. In the cosmovision of Mexican and Mesoamerican cultures, cacao embodies feminine energy and is seen as the plant of fertility. This ties into traditional beliefs where cacao and corn represent the balance of feminine and masculine energies, respectively, with cacao growing toward the earth, inside and fertile. 

Transitioning from Synthetic Hormones with Cacao 

For many women, modern gynecology practices involve the use of birth control that can disrupt natural hormonal balance. Interestingly, cacao can serve as a natural support during the transition off synthetic hormones, helping to rebalance the body’s intrinsic hormonal wisdom. Personally, it took me two years to return to a natural state of equilibrium after stopping birth control, a phase during which I wish I had known about the benefits of high-quality cacao. 

Making Cacao a Ritual 

Beyond its biochemical benefits, cacao helps create a beautiful ritual of self-love and mindfulness. Whether you drink it as a warm beverage (get the high-quality 70%+ kind!) or enjoy it in other forms, incorporating cacao into your daily life can provide a sustained, gentle energy boost—a softer alternative to the jolting effect of coffee. It’s an embodied experience that engages the senses, connecting us with nature and the cyclical wisdom of our bodies. 

The Intentional Ingredients in High-Quality Cacao Products 

Fair-trade, direct-from-source brands, like Jalanga (feel free to reach out if you want help finding a great brand), incorporate synergistic ingredients like lavender, cardamom, reishi mushrooms, and nuts (brain food, and healthy fats) to enhance cacao’s health benefits. These thoughtful combinations create a harmonious and functional approach to wellness, layered with rich textures and flavors.

Ultimately, I invite all women to explore the wonders of cacao. It’s not just a treat; it’s a powerful ally in our pursuit of hormonal harmony and overall wellness. Whether you’re looking to balance your cycle, enhance fertility, or simply indulge in a delicious, healthful ritual, cacao has so much to offer.
