Come on down, Dopey Nation. Your community is about to get weird in the best way.
On Saturday, October 3, the Dopey Podcast crew takes over the SVA Theatre in Chelsea for DopeyCon: The Game Show Experience, presented by Mountainside Treatment Center. For seven-ish years, DopeyCons have been the place where addicts and alcoholics in recovery gather to laugh loudly, remember the friends we’ve lost, and prove on a very public stage that sober people know how to throw a party.
This year, they’re turning the whole thing into a game show. And here’s the kicker: the contestants are you. Show up in a Dopey-style costume and your odds of getting pulled into the show go up. You’ll also get a free something, which is exactly the level of detail we’ve come to expect and love from this crew.
What Exactly Is This Thing?
In the Dopey Foundation’s own words: “Imagine if The Price is Right had group sex with Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, MTV Unplugged, Def Comedy Jam, The Moth and Katz’s Deli all at once.”
Subtle? No. Accurate? Almost certainly.
The night opens with a 6 PM reception featuring half pastrami sandwiches straight from Katz’s Delicatessen, plus vegan and vegetarian options for the plant-based members of the Nation. Sober celebrities and local artists will be milling around the crowd, so bring your best schmooze.
The Lineup Is Stacked
The guest list reads like a who’s who of recovery culture: Hank Azaria, Carl Radke of Summer House, Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph, Zac Clark, authors Jerry Stahl, James Frey, and Erin Khar, Alexis Haines, Brian Murray of Dogs in a Pile, comedian Matt Lieb, plus Abbey Fickly, Rachel Slocum, Kevin McEnroe, Jeannine Coulter, Ray Brown, Shane Enholm, Ben Croxton, Amanda Crossly, Sara Clark, LJ Ruggiero, and beloved Dopey regulars like Handsome Evan, Lenny from the Beach, The Great Cormac, ‘Nobody Cares’ Anthony, Alan, and Linda. And more, because of course there’s more.
