Purpose Beyond Survival
The human experience is rich with wisdom of ancestors who mastered survival, leaving a legacy we didn’t earn but fully inherited. This unearned wisdom, while a gift, often leaves us questioning our purpose.
It is a classy problem to be freed from the urgency of survival. Without intention, it evolves to the pattern of more. More success, more possessions, more accolades. This leads us to asking more questions: “How can I do this faster? How can I get more?” It focuses on getting instead of giving. It’s what we call survival thinking.
What if we change our focus from survival thinking to post-survival living? The transition from a survival moment to a living moment changes our purpose from survival to contribution. It transforms our questions to, “What is the indicated thing to do? What am I being called to do?”
In living moments, we are inspired to share our earned wisdom, with no strings attached. The change from getting to giving not only enriches our lives but also strengthens our communities.
How might focusing on contribution rather than accumulation change your interactions?

Paid Practice Beats Working
Getting paid to practice life beats working to get paid.
In the context of work, whoever signs my paycheck is going to pay me to become more effective. Effectiveness is synonymous with happiness in terms of getting what I want. Happiness is being happy with what I did and how the results turned out.
My overwhelming experience is that when I’ve been effective, doing the right thing, not doing things right, I don’t give two shits about the results. Consequently, I’m happy.
Regardless of what any given job is, there’s an abstract of that skill in your personal life. Whoever signs your paycheck is going to pay you to get better at that skill. You have the opportunity to become a more effective human and can translate that effectiveness to where you DON’T get paid.
Getting paid to practice to be more effective in our lives that we pay for, beats working.
Where are you getting paid to practice?

Missing or Hiding
All dishonesty originates from a false story created by either missing details or hiding truths. In both cases, our vision is distorted.
Are you missing something you’re hiding from?

Failure, Incompetence, Roadblocks
In a world of too much toomuchness, it’s easy to mistake stress for failure, confusion for incompetence, and obstacles for roadblocks.
What if each were a cue?
A cue to observe stress as a signal, confusion as an invitation, and an obstacle as a design constraint.
What if each were an opportunity to align to life’s unsolvable puzzle of too much toomuchness with intention instead of urgency?

The Only Gift
We can’t gift what was never ours to give. That’s the paradox of contribution.
Everything is a gift. Our talents, our resources, even our time is on loan from theboss. It’s not ours to give. It’s ours to share.
We believe that it’s been provided for us to steward and to share.
The one thing that is ours, is our attention. It is the one thing that we have to give. It is the real gift.
What would it look like to give the real gift of your attention today?

Optimize vs. Coordinate
Optimization minimizes waste and asks, “What’s most efficient? What is the right way?”
Coordination develops coherence and asks, “What’s most aligned? What is the right action?”
Questioning the right way assumes that we are doing the right action.
Questioning the right action is the right way to figure out what to do.
Are you looking for the right way or the right action?

Quitting and Stopping
Quitting is an unplanned ending. Its ending BEFORE meeting the requirements for finishing.
Stopping is a planned ending. Its ending AFTER meeting the requirements of finishing.
Are ending something without first defining what finishing actually meant?

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint.
