Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.
Classy has a membership feature! We have a growing collection of Classy’s daily emails, discussion recordings, and a dictionary of concepts. JOIN US to explore the collection for a deeper understanding of the ideas we use to navigate life and the truth as we perceive it to be.

Objection vs Objective
An objection is resistance. It stops progress, challenges direction, and is an explanation as to why something won’t work.
An objective, on the other hand, is a guiding force. It clarifies purpose, aligns effort, and is an explanation as to why we are working.

Resistance Is Part of the Work
In development, resistance isn’t a red flag. It’s an indicator that we are on the right track.
Development requires leaving the unknown, with or without enthusiasm. The idea that we are going to leave the unknown and not experience some internal resistance is precious.
We call any intentional effort that triggers internal resistance pucker work. Where what’s possible collides with what’s comfortable.
Resistance isn’t the system breaking down. It’s the system waking up. It reveals the space between who we are and who we’re becoming.
Avoid it, and we plateau.
Engage it, and we develop.
Where in your work are you using resistance for a reason to stop?

Culture AND Productivity
thebosslovesand. We often treat culture and productivity as a tradeoff. Like one comes at the cost of the other.
What if culture isn’t a delay to productivity, but a design for it?
Culture is how we treat each other while we work. Productivity is what we produce together.
One without the other leads to overwhelm or indifference.
The question isn’t which to choose, but whether we know which we’re actually designing for.
Are you prioritizing output at the cost of how you got there?

Blocking for Value
What we’re willing to make time for
reveals what we believe is worth building.
If we’re not blocking the time for something,
the thing is not creating enough value.
Or we aren’t being honest about what matters.
What are you, or aren’t you, blocking time for?

A Sleight of Hand vs A Sleight of Truth
An illusion is a sleight of hand.
It’s something I’ve misinterpreted.
A delusion is a sleight of truth.
It’s a lie I’ve told myself.
Illusions are shared, temporary, and corrected with awareness.
They distort perception, not intention.
Delusions are personal, persistent, and resistant to change.
They’re the false conclusions we refuse to challenge.
Are your conclusions grounded in awareness or held in place by persistence?

Leave Room for theboss
We act like we’re the boss.
Like it’s all on us to figure out, fix, force, solve.
The good news about being the boss? You’re in charge.
The bad news? You’re in charge.
What we call theboss is what we trust is in charge.
What if being part of something bigger,
something like theboss,
means it’s not all on you to figure out, fix, or solve?
What if some of it is above our pay grade?
thebossissupergenerous.
Not always immediate. Not on our timeline.
Always at the right time.
Always generous.
Leaving room for theboss isn’t giving up.
It’s being honest about who is in control.
It’s trust.
Trust that doing what’s indicated is good enuf.
Good enuf allows us to leave room for theboss.
What would it look like to leave room, without letting go of responsibility?

Copy Off the Smartest Kids in Class
Who is the smartest kid in class?
It changes.
Depends on the subject, the moment, the complexity.
Copy off of all of them.
With permission.
When’s class?
Everything is class.
More on that in tomorrow’s post.
Back to smart kids.
Build on brilliance.
Extend the pattern.
Intentionally iterate.
That’s contribution.
That’s how we all contribute.
It is the only way to contribute.
Don’t confuse originality with ownership.
Nothing ever starts from nothing.
Everything has a previous version.
Every new thing
is the next version of next
of some old thing.
It’s likely someone is already doing
or has already done
what you’re trying to figure out.
Who can you copy?

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
