Classy Problems is a daily post of thinking in motion by Dan T. Rogers. Each post stands alone as a thought-provoking piece, yet together, they create a puzzle of ideas. They invite you to see things from a different angle, rethink what you thought you knew, and explore what’s beyond your current understanding.
Classy has a membership feature! We have a growing collection of Classy’s daily emails, discussion recordings, and a dictionary of concepts. JOIN US to explore the collection for a deeper understanding of the ideas we use to navigate life and the truth as we perceive it to be.

Everything is a Class
Class is all learning.
Everything is learning.
Every moment is material.
That hard conversation? Class.
That weird silence on the Zoom call? Class.
That windstorm that took out the tree branch? Class.
That client who said no? Still class.
The world isn’t divided into classrooms and real life.
It’s one big ongoing lab.
When we treat every moment as material,
we stop performing and start learning.
There are no wasted repetitions when you’re in class on purpose.
What does your last performance look like if you reframe it as material?

Receptivity Does Not Equal Engaged
Engagement doesn’t always look like applause.
Sometimes it’s the quiet furrowed brow,
the silence of processing,
or the tension of discomfort.
Discomfort might mean the system is doing its job,
revealing the need for the next version of next.
What discomfort might be revealing your own need for the next version of next?

Last vs Next
Feedback is reference for the next version of next.
When we hear feedback as a question,
we tend to defend.
When we hear it as confirmation,
we default.
When we hear it as information,
we design.
Feedback reveals coherence.
It shows where clarity is asking for more.
For the next version of next.
It’s not a way to keep score.
It’s a mirror to see more clearly.
Does feedback inform your next version or reinforce your last one?

Control Disguised as Discipline
I used to believe control meant I cared more.
That managing, solving, or fixing made me responsible.
That planning everyone else’s outcomes was love.
Turns out, it was a lie I told myself.
A delusion disguised as discipline.
The truth?
I never had control.
Not over people.
Not over outcomes.
Not even over timing.
Letting go of control isn’t giving up.
It’s letting go of the lie.
When we release the delusion of control,
we stop trying to prove we care
and start demonstrating it with intention.
Where are you mistaking control for care?

Step, Then Practice
Survival seeks homeostasis.
Predictability. Safety. Certainty.
Development requires the opposite.
Unpredictability. Risk. Uncertainty.
Leaving the known.
And something more.
Refinement.
We don’t get better by preparing for the perfect step.
We get better by taking a step.
Then practicing.
Crawl. Walk. Run.
Stumble. Adjust. Repeat.
Sequence dictates.
It doesn’t slow us down.
It shapes us.
It’s recursive.
It doesn’t skip.
It invites refinement.
That’s how we develop.
Where are your sequences shaping you more than you’re shaping them?

Learn It Alone, Live It Together
Societal design requires we walk as individuals first.
Then we can walk together.
A skill must be developed individually.
By an individual.
By one of us.
Then it can be practiced communally.
If I haven’t trained it in myself,
I can’t contribute it to the group.
Shared development doesn’t bypass personal responsibility.
It multiplies it.
Personal development isn’t separate from community.
It’s the seed of it.
A group can only develop the skills that its individuals are willing to embody.
Are you expecting change without first training the skill yourself?

Helpful or Looped
There are times I tell myself I’m being responsive.
Available.
Supportive.
In service.
I called it helpful.
It was compulsive.
I couldn’t see the loop.
I wasn’t aware of the pattern.
I said yes too quickly. I filled the space. I didn’t sit with the silence.
It wasn’t generosity.
It was performance.
Like volunteering to lead something before I even asked if I should.
This loop has a signature: urgency without grounding.
What helps me make the change is pausing.
Asking: Is this urgency or clarity?
Patterns don’t ask permission.
Loops don’t break themselves.

What is a classy problem? A classy problem is when we’ve been afforded the opportunity to figure out what to do. Time to figure it out. Time to practice. Time to discern. When faced with the time to figure out a classy problem, it is more effective to focus on what NOT to do than trying to figure out what to do. In a word: restraint. JOIN US in exploring the distinction between what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of clarity.
