BrewDog, with a major brewing presence in Columbus, Ohio, has never been shy about shaking up the craft beer world. Known for its loud branding and boundary-pushing brews, BrewDog has also been fairly aggressive in stepping into the non-alcoholic space. Whether you love its style or roll your eyes at its antics, BrewDog clearly isn’t afraid to experiment with flavors and styles that keep the NA shelves interesting.
This week we are drinking Thunder Joe from BrewDog. As a cream ale, the expectation is usually something smooth, slightly sweet, and easy-drinking. Thunder Joe pours a clear light copper color that doesn’t immediately scream coffeehouse creation, but once it hits the scent center, those roasted coffee and cocoa aromas come charging into the sniffy holes. It’s a surprising setup for a brew that looks so light and laid-back in the glass.
Once Thunder Joe from BrewDog slides down the tasting chute, the flavor really starts to show its hand. Coffee and cocoa notes pop up immediately, creating a bold contrast against the beer’s lighter color. The mouthfeel is full yet crisp, and the finish leans creamy in a way that feels right at home for the style. It’s a curious combo—light looks with dark-roasted flavor—but BrewDog manages to make the creamy, cocoa-kissed character work.
Untappd gives Thunder Joe from BrewDog a 3.5 out of 5. I’m sliding in just under that at a 3.4. Cream ales are still a bit of a rarity in the NA space, so it’s always nice to see one show up on the shelf. BrewDog delivers a solid, slightly surprising brew here, even if it’s not quite a category crusher. As always, give it a try yourself and see what your own flavor funnel thinks of the thunder.
